This second edition still covers most of the significant terms encountered as a result of the growth of biotechnology in the 1980s. These include aspects of fermentation, brewing, vaccines, plant tissue culture, antibiotic production, production and use of enzymes, biomass for energy, byproduct recovery, effluent treatment, equipment, processes, microorganisms and biochemicals. To these definitions have been added over 800 new entries which reflect the discoveries and developments of the last few years as well as the shift of emphasis in the 1990s towards an understanding of the human genome and the genetic makeup of other plants and animals of economic importance, the identification and production of an ever widening range of factors affecting cell growth and differentiation and concern for the environment.
