Celebrity humanitarianism : the ideology of global charity [Monograph]
Kapoor, Ilan \ 2013
Capitalism - Celebrities - Charities - Humanitarianism

"In the last two decades especially, we have witnessed the rise of 'celebrity' forms of global humanitarianism and charity work, spearheaded by entertainment stars, billionaires, and activist NGOs (e.g. Bob Geldof, Bono, Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Bill Gates, George Soros, Save Darfur, Medeçins Sans Frontières). This book examines this new phenomenon, arguing that celebrity humanitarianism legitimates, and indeed promotes, neoliberal capitalism and global inequality. Drawing on Slavoj Žižek's work, the book shows how celebrity humanitarianism, far from being altruistic, is significantly contaminated and ideological: it is most often self-serving, helping to promote institutional aggrandizement and the celebrity 'brand'; it advances consumerism and corporate capitalism, and rationalizes the very global inequality it seeks to redress; it is fundamentally depoliticizing, despite its pretensions to 'activism'; and it contributes to a 'postdemocratic' political landscape, which appears outwardly open and consensual, but is in fact managed by unaccountable elites"-----"This book examines the new phenomenon of celebrity humanitarianism arguing that legitimates neoliberal capitalism and global inequality"--

Democracy [Monograph]
Tilly, C. \ 2007
democracy - political systems - history - philosophy - future

Democracy identifies the general processes causing democratization and de-democratization at a national level across the world over the last few hundred years. It singles out integration of trust networks into public politics, insulation of public politics from categorical inequality, and suppression of autonomous coercive power centers as crucial processes. Through analytic narratives and comparisons of multiple regimes, mostly since World War II, this books makes the case for recasting current theories of democracy, democratization, and de-democratization.

Food policy: integrating health, environment and society [Monograph]
Lang, T. \ Barling, D. \ Caraher, M. \ cop. 2009
food policy - health - environment - justice

For over half a century, food policy has mapped a path for progress based upon a belief that the right mix of investment, scientific input, and human skills could unleash a surge in productive capacity which would resolve humanity's food-related health and welfare problems. It assumed that more food would yield greater health and happiness by driving down prices, increasing availability, and feeding more mouths. In the 21st century, this policy mix is quietly becoming unstuck. In a world marred by obesity alongside malnutrition, climate change alongside fuel and energy crises, water stress alongside more mouths to feed, and social inequalities alongside unprecedented accumulation of wealth, the old rubric of food policy needs re-evaluation. This book explores the enormity of what the new policy mix must address, taking the approach that food policy must be inextricably linked with public health, environmental damage, and social inequalities to be effective. Written by three authors with differing backgrounds, one in political science, another in environmental health and health promotion, and the third in social psychology, this book reflects the myriad of perspectives essential to a comprehensive view of modern food policy. It attempts to make sense of what is meant by food policy; explores whether the term has any currency in current policy discourse; assesses whether current policies help or hinder what happens; judges whether consensus can triumph in the face of competing bids for understanding; looks at all levels of governance, across the range of actors in the food system, from companies and the state to civil society and science; considers what direction food policies are taking, not just in the UK but internationally; assesses who (and what) gains or loses in the making of these food policies; and identifies a modern framework for judging how good or limited processes of policy-making are. This book provides a major comprehensive review of current and past food policy, thinking and proposing the need for what the authors call an ecological public health approach to food policy. Nothing less will be fit for the 21st century.

Grondbeginselen der sociologie [Monograph] - 12e, [herz.] dr
Jager, H. de \ Mok, A.L. \ Sipkema, G. \ 2004
sociology - textbooks

How to read Foucault [Monograph]
Oksala, J. \ 2008
philosophy - power - sexual behaviour - mental disorders - crime - philosophical systems

Michel Foucault was a philosopher of extraordinary talent, political activist, social theorist, cultural critic, and creative historian. He irreversibly shaped the way we think today about such controversial issues as power, sexuality, madness, and criminality. The book explores the conceptual tools that Foucault gave us for constructing new forms of thinking as well as for smashing old certainties. It offers a lucid account of him as a thinker whose persistent aim was to challenge the self-evidence and necessity of our current experiences, practices, and institutions by showing their historical development and, therefore, contingency. Extracts are taken from the whole range of Foucault s writings his books, essays, lectures, and interviews including the major works History of Madness, The Order of Things, Discipline and Punish, and The History of Sexuality.

Techniek in Nederland in de twintigste eeuw - [Dl.] 3: Landbouw, voeding [Monograph]
Schot, J.W. \ Bruhèze, A.A.A. de la \ 2000
agriculture - food - food technology - technology - history - technical progress - netherlands

On the political [Monograph]
Mouffe, C. \ 2005
political science - political parties - conservatism - liberalism - democracy - globalization - philosophy

Since September 11th, we frequently hear that political differences should be put aside: the real struggle is between good and evil. What does this mean for political and social life? Is there a 'Third Way' beyond left and right, and if so, should we fear or welcome it? This thought-provoking book by Chantal Mouffe, a globally recognized political author, presents a timely account of the current state of democracy, affording readers the most relevant and up-to-date information. Arguing that liberal 'third way thinking' ignores fundamental, conflicting aspects of human nature, Mouffe states that, far from expanding democracy, globalization is undermining the combative and radical heart of democratic life. Going back first to Aristotle, she identifies the historical origins of the political and reflects on the Enlightenment, and the social contract, arguing that in spite of its good intentions, it levelled the radical core of political life. Contemporary examples, including the Iraq war, racism and the rise of the far right, are used to illustrate and support her theory that far from combating extremism, the quest for consensus politics undermines the ability to challenge it. These case studies are also highly effective points of reference for student revision. On the Political is a stimulating argument about the future of politics and addresses the most fundamental aspects of democracy that will aid further study.

Kidd, W. \ Legge, K. \ Harari, P. \ 2010
political power - politics - power - political systems - social participation - sociology - society - contemporary society - globalization - nationalism - uk - state - political parties - revolution - voting - elections

Political organizations govern the way we live and have the power to make decisions on behalf of entire societies. But what political issues are important to our study of sociology and why? Do we really need to understand politics in order to fully understand society? And can individuals in society affect political change? This student-focused book gives readers a clear introduction to the key ideas, themes and debates in political sociology. Combining accessible explanations with critical analysis, the book explores the ideas of classical and contemporary sociologists. It maps out how they have been developed, reinterpreted and evaluated in response to changes in society. In particular, the text also: • defines, explores and assesses what is meant by “power” • assesses the modern political landscape and the ideologies of different political parties • looks at voting patterns and asks what this tells us about society • explores issues of globalization and nationalization and how they have shaped modern-day societies As part of the Skills-Based Sociology series, Politics and Power is filled with a variety of tasks, activities and exam practice questions that encourage students to take an active role in their learning. Promoting critical thinking skills alongside development of knowledge, this book is the perfect starting-point for students learning about power and politics in society.

The new peasantries : struggles for autonomy and sustainability in an era of empire and globalization [Monograph]
Ploeg, J.D. van der \ 2008
peasantry - peasant farming - rural development - rural society - farmers - farming - farming systems - entrepreneurship - globalization - rural sociology - development studies - sustainability - food production - politics - agricultural policy - italy - netherlands - peru - landscape management

This book explores the position, role and significance of the peasantry in an era of globalization, particularly of the agrarian markets and food industries. It argues that the peasant condition is characterized by a struggle for autonomy that finds expression in the creation and development of a self-governed resource base and associated forms of sustainable development. In this respect the peasant mode of farming fundamentally differs from entrepreneurial and corporate ways of farming. The author demonstrates that the peasantries are far from waning. Instead, both industrialized and developing countries are witnessing complex and richly chequered processes of 're-peasantization', with peasants now numbering over a billion worldwide. The author's arguments are based on three longitudinal studies (in Peru, Italy and The Netherlands) that span 30 years and provide original and thought-provoking insights into rural and agrarian development processes. The book combines and integrates different bodies of literature: the rich traditions of peasant studies, development sociology, rural sociology, neo-institutional economics and the recently emerging debates on Empire.
