Toelichting (Engels) The main focus of this book is to provide state of the art information and identify the major gaps and opportunities for the improvement of energy efficiency of the urban water cycle, with a specific focus on wastewater treatment and reuse. The manifold interactions between water and energy are analysed, including energy footprint of alternative resources and the water footprint of energy production. The embodied energy in the water cycle can be better valorised by means of new management strategies, infrastructure concepts, recycling loops, nutrient recovery and innovative technologies (microbial fuel cells, forward osmosis).
