Toelichting (Engels) The chemical variation of suspended sediment over space and time in rivers has rarely been studied. Moreover, measuring the chemical composition of suspended sediment in rivers usually requires the collection of large volumes of river water to obtain sufficient suspended sediment for analysis. In this thesis, the spatial and temporal chemical variation of suspended sediment in the Rhine River was studied using a handheld X-Ray Fluorescence scanner (XRF), since this device can measure element concentrations of suspended sediment extracted by filtering water samples. Because this approach is not widely used, the measured concentrations were verified with data obtained from the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
