Groothuijse, F.A.G. \ Boeve, M.N. \ Broek, G.M. van den \ Keessen, A. \ Rijswick, H.F.M.W. van \ Boer, N. de \ Smit, C. \ 2018

Abstract:

2018

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this course, you learn how the agro-food value chain approaches the challenge of constantly improving its competitiveness by producing high quality food and products and also aiming to attain greater sustainability. Some of the topics of this course are: The notion of quality for food and agricultural products and consumer value. How to conduct market research in this field. Labelling, branding and pricing strategies, as-well as innovation in the agro-food sector. How sustainability can be used as a competitive advantage through corporate social responsibility. The role and different types of industrial standards. The different forms of coordination in the chain, in particular with regard to the retailing and distribution sector. This course is taught by a group of international experts from Universities in Italy, Germany, Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands. Each of them will give you insights into a specific topic related to food quality and the organization of the agro-food value chains.

Sustainable Food Security: Crop Production : MOOC [Lecture notes]
Giller, K.E. \ Ven, G.W.J. van de \ 2018

Abstract:
Crop production: learn about agriculture and food production for the future How much food will be available for humankind in the future? Feeding nine billion people in 2050 without exhausting the planetary reserves is perhaps the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced. In this course of the XSeries in environmental studies, you will examine the principles of crop production. You will learn about the ‘availability pillar’ of global food security that lies at the heart of food production, applicable to both crops and animal production. This course will discuss why yields in some parts of the world are lagging behind and identify the agro-ecological drivers that shape the broad diversity of production systems. Also, key issues relating to the closing of yield gaps and the difference in visions of sustainability will be explored.

Gedomesticeerd?
Neijenhuis, Francesca \ Hopster, Hans \ 2018

Abstract:
A clear distinction between wild and domesticated animal species is important for Dutch legislation for either permit or forbid the use of animals in circuses and other performances. The study in this report briefly describes how domestication of animals has taken place and what the characteristic elements are for the description of the concept. In addition, the consequences of domestication for behaviour, physiology and morphology of animals and the way in which changes are passed on from generation to generation are discussed. Due to a request to the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality to place the zebu (Bos taurus indicus) and the reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) on Appendix IV to the Animal Owners Decree, based on the literature, the extent to which both species can be considered as domesticated is evaluated. Furthermore it has been estimated what the consequences are for the well-being of specimens of these species if they are used in circuses and in other entertainment performances
