The wild oryza genomes [Monograph]
Mondal, Tapan K.. \ Henry, Robert J.. \ 2018
Oryza Genetics - Genes - Genomes - Rice Genetics

Abstract:
This book focuses on the latest genome sequencing of the 25 wild Oryza species, public and private genomic resources, and their impact on genetic improvement research. It also addresses the untapped reservoir of agronomically important traits in wild Oryza species. Rice is a model crop plant that is frequently used to address several basic questions in plant biology, yet its wild relatives offer an untapped source of agronomically important alleles that are absent in the rice gene pool. The genus Oryza is extremely diverse, as indicated by a wide range of chromosome numbers, different ploidy levels and genome sizes. After a 13-year gap from the first sequencing of rice in the 2002, the genomes of 11 wild Oryza species have now been sequenced and more will follow. These vast genomic resources are extremely useful for addressing several basic questions on the origin of the genus, evolutionary relationships between the species, domestication, and environmental adaptation, and also help to substantiate molecular breeding and pre-breeding work to introgress useful characters horizontally from wild species into cultivated rice.

The future of management education. Volume 2, Differentiation strategies for business schools / [Monograph]
Dameron, Stéphanie \ Durand, Thomas \ 2018
Business education - Management Study and teaching

Abstract:
This book discusses the challenges facing business schools and management education systems around the world. Based on documented descriptions of institutional and competitive dynamics in the ‘industry’ of management education, the authors show how management education is going through major changes such as new governance and business models, mergers and acquisitions, internationalisation of faculty and students coexisting with entrenchment in local markets, ever more needs for financial resources, development of distant and blended learning, and increasing pressure for research output to boost rankings. With concerns surrounding the sustainability of current trends in faculty salary inflation, social acceptability of higher fees, cost of distance learning and the risk of an academic-industry divide around knowledge produced by management research, The Future of Management Education develops an analysis of business models and discusses strategic implications for stakeholders. The second volume extends the discussion to a total of 23 countries to bring a genuinely global perspective and move away from the Euro-centric outlook. The countries covered in the second volume include China, Brazil, Russia, Singapore and France.

Econodynamics : the theory of social production [Monograph] - Third edition.
Pokrovskii, Vladimir N.. \ 2018
Economics - Endogenous growth (Economics)

Abstract:
This book, now in its third edition, explores how human populations grow, based on their creative abilities. To reconsider the theory of economic growth from a physicist's perspective, the book analyses the concepts of value and utility and their relationship to thermodynamic concepts. This approach allows the author to include characteristics of technology in descriptions of development and to formulate a phenomenological (macroeconomic, no-price fluctuations are discussed) theory of production as a set of evolutionary equations in one-sector and multi-sector approximations. The theory is proved to be useful for describing both national economies and global production in ancient times. This monograph presents the topics in a compact and consistent manner and can be used by students with a background in physics and other natural sciences who wish to specialize in economics. It explains how the growth of production is connected with advances in technology, consumption of labour and energy and makes it possible to analyse past and present social production systems and to build scripts of future progress. The book is of interest to energy specialists engaged in planning and analyzing the production and consumption of energy carriers, and to economists wanting to know how energy and technology affect economic growth. This third edition has been substantially revised and three brand new chapters have been added. Chapter 8 illustrates the robustness of the theory with the aid of statistical historical data from the Russian economy, while Chapter 12 is devoted to a reconstruction of the global production activity in ancient times. Chapter 13 discusses the principles of the organization of social production.

The vector mode in the second-order cosmological perturbation theory [Monograph]
Saga, Shohei \ 2018
Perturbation (Astronomy)

Abstract:
This thesis sheds valuable new light on the second-order cosmological perturbation theory, extensively discussing it in the context of cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations. It explores the observational consequences of the second-order vector mode, and addresses magnetic field generation and the weak lensing signatures, which are key phenomena of the vector mode. The author demonstrates that the second-order vector mode, which never appears at the linear-order level, naturally arises from the non-linear coupling of the first-order scalar modes. This leads to the remarkable statement that the vector-order mode clearly contributes to the generation of cosmological magnetic fields. Moreover, the weak lensing observations are shown to be accessible to the vector mode. On the basis of ongoing and forthcoming observations, the thesis concludes that the second-order vector mode is detectable.

Introduction to distributed computer systems : principles and features [Monograph]
Czaja, Ludwik \ 2018
Computer networks - Electronic data processing Distributed processing

Abstract:
This book introduces readers to selected issues in distributed systems, and primarily focuses on principles, not on technical details. Though the systems discussed are based on existing (von Neumann) computer architectures, the book also touches on emerging processing paradigms. Uniquely, it approaches system components not only as static constructs, but also ?in action,? exploring the different states they pass through. The author?s teaching experience shows that newcomers to the field, students and even IT professionals can far more readily grasp the essence of distributed algorithmic structures in action, than on the basis of static descriptions.

Simulation-based usability evaluation of spoken and multimodal dialogue systems [Monograph]
Hillmann, Stefan \ 2018

Abstract:
This book describes an extension of the user behaviour simulation (UBS) of an existing tool for automatic usability evaluation (AUE). This extension is based upon a user study with a smart home system. It uses technical-sociological methods for the execution of the study and the analysis of the collected data. A comparison of the resulting UBS with former UBSs, as well as the empirical data, shows that the new simulation approach outperforms the former simulation. The improvement affects the prediction of dialogue metrics that are related to dialogue efficiency and dialogue effectiveness. Furthermore, the book describes a parameter-based data model, as well as a related framework. Both are used to uniformly describe multimodal human-computer interactions and to provide such descriptions for usability evaluations. Finally, the book proposes a new two-stage method for the evaluation of UBSs. The method is based on the computation of a distance measures between two dialogue corpora and the pair-wise comparison of distances among several dialogue corpora.

Dayton, Paul D. \ 2018
Medicine - Orthopedics - Sports medicine - Bunion Surgery

Abstract:
This unique book provides a critical examination of the current traditions and techniques commonly taught regarding hallux valgus correction and contrasts them with new, evidence-based anatomic and surgical concepts that change the entire approach to bunion surgery. Beginning with the history, etiology and epidemiology of the deformity, its clinical implications and physical and radiological assessment are then discussed. An overview of surgical correction strategies is then presented, followed by detailed chapters on the techniques themselves, covering rationale for the approach, anatomic and technical considerations, post-operative management and evidence-based outcomes. Surgical techniques include phalangeal, cresentic and distal metatarsal osteotomies, the scarf and rotational scarf procedure, joint arthrodesis and arthroplasty, among others. The evaluation and management of the hallux valgus deformity has changed very little over the past several decades despite much discussion, debate, research and new technology. Now, utilizing the most up-to-date evidence and presenting multiple treatment strategies, Evidence-Based Bunion Surgery will be the new standard for the management of hallux valgus for podiatric and orthopedic surgeons, residents and fellows.

The history of multiphase science and computational fluid dynamics : a personal memoir [Monograph]
Lyczkowski, Robert W.. \ 2018
Multiphase flow History - Computational fluid dynamics - Multiphase flow

Abstract:
This book tells the story of how the science of computational multiphase flow began in an effort to better analyze hypothetical light water power reactor accidents, including the “loss of coolant” accident. Written in the style of a memoir by an author with 40 years’ engineering research experience in computer modeling of fluidized beds and slurries, multiphase computational fluid dynamics, and multiphase flow, most recently at Argonne National Laboratory, the book traces how this new science developed during this time into RELAP5 and other computer programs to encompass realistic descriptions of phenomena ranging from fluidized beds for energy and chemicals production, slurry transport, pyroclastic flow from volcanoes, hemodynamics of blood-borne cells, and flow of granular particulates. Such descriptions are not possible using the classical single-phase Navier-Stokes equations. Whereas many books on computational techniques and computational fluid dynamics have appeared, they do not trace the historical development of the science in any detail, and none touch on the beginnings of multiphase science. A robust, process-rich account of technologic evolution, the book is ideal for students and practitioners of mechanical, chemical, nuclear engineering, and the history of science and technology. Imparts a personal narrative tracing the critical events in the initiation, development, and propagation of multiphase science and computational fluid dynamics in its historical context; Reveals the amazing chain of incidents and coincidences but for which multiphase science and computational fluid dynamics would never have evolved; Presents in narrative form many facets of multiphase science (MPS), including sand grains, bubbles, and water droplets and how MPS differs from single-phase science; Describes the development of what came to be called the seriated loop (SLOOP) code, intend ed to replace the RELAP4 code, used to perform safety studies for and to license nuclear reactors and the politics of science that led to its demise. .

Global formulations of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics on manifolds : a geometric approach to modeling and analysis [Monograph]
Lee, Taeyoung \ Leok, Melvin \ McClamroch, N. H. \ 2018
Hamiltonian systems - Lagrangian functions - Manifolds (Mathematics)

Abstract:
This book provides an accessible introduction to the variational formulation of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, with a novel emphasis on global descriptions of the dynamics, which is a significant conceptual departure from more traditional approaches based on the use of local coordinates on the configuration manifold. In particular, we introduce a general methodology for obtaining globally valid equations of motion on configuration manifolds that are Lie groups, homogeneous spaces, and embedded manifolds, thereby avoiding the difficulties associated with coordinate singularities. The material is presented in an approachable fashion by considering concrete configuration manifolds of increasing complexity, which then motivates and naturally leads to the more general formulation that follows. Understanding of the material is enhanced by numerous in-depth examples throughout the book, culminating in non-trivial applications involving multi-body systems. This book is written for a general audience of mathematicians, engineers, and physicists with a basic knowledge of mechanics. Some basic background in differential geometry is helpful, but not essential, as the relevant concepts are introduced in the book, thereby making the material accessible to a broad audience, and suitable for either self-study or as the basis for a graduate course in applied mathematics, engineering, or physics.

Food Moral and ethical aspects

Abstract:
"Although many consider professional ethics in the food supply chain an essential topic that should be covered in any degree program, few higher education institutions currently include a module on ethics in their study programs. Instead, ethics is taught in tandem to the core curriculum and is often embedded in the contents of other modules rather than treated as a subject in its own right. Ethics, however, is important enough to warrant a different teaching and educational approach. This book provides support for development of a course in ethics for food studies education. The book is divided into 3 sections, each containing several chapters: Section 1 includes chapters that identify and discuss several ethical issues along the food chain, with particular attention given to issues in the food industry and in consumer behavior; Section 2 includes chapters that present the basis of a code of conduct in the food profession, as well as descriptions of existing codes of conduct for food industry and food scientist professionals. These include codes for the ethics of publishing, and also ethics in risk communication; Section 3 includes chapters based on case studies with examples of teaching approaches currently used in teaching food ethics. These approaches are easy to implement and have already been tested and confirmed as successful examples that engage students in this topic"--Publisher's description.

Statistics - Assessment - Educational psychology - Psychometrics - Computer adaptive testing - R (Computer program language)

Abstract:
The goal of this guide and manual is to provide a practical and brief overview of the theory on computerized adaptive testing (CAT) and multistage testing (MST) and to illustrate the methodologies and applications using R open source language and several data examples. Implementation relies on the R packages catR and mstR that have been already or are being developed by the first author (with the team) and that include some of the newest research algorithms on the topic. The book covers many topics along with the R-code: the basics of R, theoretical overview of CAT and MST, CAT designs, CAT assembly methodologies, CAT simulations, catR package, CAT applications, MST designs, IRT-based MST methodologies, tree-based MST methodologies, mstR package, and MST applications. CAT has been used in many large-scale assessments over recent decades, and MST has become very popular in recent years. R open source language also has become one of the most useful tools for applications in almost all fields, including business and education. Though very useful and popular, R is a difficult language to learn, with a steep learning curve. Given the obvious need for but with the complex implementation of CAT and MST, it is very difficult for users to simulate or implement CAT and MST. Until this manual, there has been no book for users to design and use CAT and MST easily and without expense; i.e., by using the free R software. All examples and illustrations are generated using predefined scripts in R language, available for free download from the book's website. Provides exhaustive descriptions of CAT and MST processes in an R environment Guides users to simulate and implement CAT and MST using R for their applications Summarizes the latest developments and challenges of packages catR and mstR Provides R packages catR and mstR and illustrates to users how to do CAT and MST simulations and implementations using R David Magis, PhD, is Research Associate of the "Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique - FNRS" at the Department of Education, University of Liège, Belgium. Mathematical aspects of multi-porosity continua [Monograph]
Straughan, B. \ 2017
Porous materials Mathematics - Computer science Mathematics - Continuum mechanics - Mathematical physics - Mathematics

Abstract:
This book is devoted to describing theories for porous media where such pores have an inbuilt macro structure and a micro structure. For example, a double porosity material has pores on a macro scale, but additionally there are cracks or fissures in the solid skeleton. The actual body is allowed to deform and thus the underlying theory is one of elasticity. Various different descriptions are reviewed. Chapter 1 introduces the classical linear theory of elastodynamics together with uniqueness and continuous dependence results. Chapters 2 and 3 review developments of theories for double and triple porosity using a pressure-displacement structure and also using voids-displacement. Chapter 4 compares various aspects of the pressure-displacement and voids-displacement theories via uniqueness studies and wave motion analysis. Mathematical analyses of double and triple porosity materials are included concentrating on uniqueness and stability studies in chapters 5 to 7. In chapters 8 and 9 the emphasis is on wave motion in double porosity materials with special attention paid to nonlinear waves. The final chapter embraces a novel area where an elastic body with a double porosity structure is analyzed, but the thermodynamics allows for heat to travel as a wave rather than simply by diffusion. This book will be of value to mathematicians, theoretical engineers and other practitioners who are interested in double or triple porosity elasticity and its relevance to many diverse applications.--

Engineering mathematics - Fluid mechanics - Fluid mechanics Data processing

Abstract:
Fluid mechanics (FM) is a branch of science dealing with the investi gation of flows of continua under the action of external forces. The fundamentals of FM were laid in the works of the famous scientists, such as L. Euler, M.V. Lomonosov, D. Bernoulli, J.L. Lagrange, A. Cauchy, L. Navier, S.D. Poisson, and other classics of science. Fluid mechanics underwent a rapid development during the past two centuries, and it now includes, along with the above branches, aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, rarefied gas dynamics, mechanics of multi phase and reactive media, etc. The FM application domains were expanded, and new investigation methods were developed. Certain concepts introduced by the classics of science, however, are still of primary importance and will apparently be of importance in the future. The Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions of a continuum, tensors of strains and stresses, conservation laws for mass, momentum, moment of momentum, and energy are the examples of such concepts and results. This list should be augmented by the first and second laws of thermodynamics, which determine the character and direction of processes at a given point of a continuum. The availability of the conservation laws is conditioned by the homogeneity and isotrop icity properties of the Euclidean space, and the form of these laws is related to the Newton's laws. The laws of thermodynamics have their foundation in the statistical physics.

Comprehending and Speaking about Motion in L2 Spanish : a Case of Implicit Learning in Anglophones [Monograph]
Navarro Ortega, Samuel A. \ 2017
Applied linguistics - Language and education - Lexicology - Linguistics - Psycholinguistics - Romance languages - Semantics

Abstract:
This book presents a novel analysis of the learning of motion event descriptions by Anglophone students of Spanish. The author examines cross-linguistic differences between English and Spanish, focusing on the verbal patterns of motion events, to explore how learners overcome an entrenched first-language preference to move toward the lexicalization pattern of the additional language. His findings highlight the gradual nonlinear process Anglophones traverse to acquire and produce form-meaning mappings describing motion in Spanish. The author suggests that as motion event descriptions are not normally the focus of explicit instruction, students learn this concept primarily from exposure to Spanish. Given its interdisciplinary nature, this book will be of interest to researchers working in Hispanic linguistics, cognitive semantics, and Spanish language learning and teaching.

Latissimus dorsi transfer [Monograph]
Paribelli, Gianezio \ 2017
Shoulder joint Surgery

Abstract:
This book is exceptional in providing detailed state of the art guidance on all aspects of transfer of the latissimus dorsi tendon for indications including irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears, irreparable subscapularis tears, and shoulder replacement. In addition to clear, well-illustrated descriptions of arthroscopically assisted surgical technique, readers will find helpful information on biomechanics, surgical indications, post-transfer rehabilitation, and complications and their management. Outcomes from individual studies and meta-analyses are evaluated, and a feature of special interest is the presentation of experiences and results in a series of more than 430 patients using the surgical technique first described by Enrico Gervasi more than 10 years ago. This technique involves modifications in both preparation of the footprint for the latissimus dorsi tendon and the biomechanical features of the tendon transfer and is very different from the procedure proposed by Christian Gerber. The book will be of high value for all orthopedic surgeons who perform this complex shoulder surgery, as well as for residents and fellows-in-training.

Adventures in Computer Science : From Classical Bits to Quantum Bits [Monograph]
Moret-Bonillo, Vicente \ 2017
Quantum theory - Quantum computers - Computers - Artificial intelligence - Computer science

Abstract:
The main focus of this textbook is the basic unit of information and the way in which our understanding of this has evolved over time. In particular the author covers concepts related to information, classical computing, logic, reversible computing, quantum mechanics, quantum computing, thermodynamics and some artificial intelligence and biology, all approached from the viewpoint of computer sciences. The book begins by asking the following nontrivial question: what is a bit? The author then discusses logic, logic gates, reversible computing and reversible architectures, and the concept of disorder. He then tries to establish the relationship between three essential questions that justify quantum approaches in computer sciences: the energy required to perform a real-life computation, the size of current processors, and the reversibility of quantum operations. Based on these concepts, the author establishes the conditions that justify the use of quantum techniques for certain kinds of computational tasks, and he uses formal descriptions and formal argumentations to introduce key quantum mechanical concepts and approaches. The rest of the book is formally different, focusing on practical issues, including a discussion of remarkable quantum algorithms in a treatment based on quantum circuit theory. The book is valuable for graduate students in computer science, and students of other disciplines who are engaged with physical models of information and computing.

Dualities, helicity amplitudes, and little conformal symmetry [Monograph]
Colwell, Kitran Macey M.. \ 2017
Particles (Nuclear physics) Helicity - Symmetry (Physics)

Abstract:
This thesis develops two exciting areas of particle physics research. It applies the recent new insights about the usefulness of helicity amplitudes in understanding gauge theory to the long-standing effort to understand theories with both electric and magnetic charges. It is known that for some supersymmetric theories there is an exact duality that relates two descriptions of the physics, one where the electric charges are weakly coupled and another where the electric charges are strongly coupled. The calculations in this thesis suggest that this duality can also hold in the low-energy limit of nonsupersymmetric gauge theories. The idea of addressing the hierarchy problem of the standard model Higgs mechanism using conformal symmetry is also explored. Analogously to “Little Higgs” models, where divergences are cancelled only at one-loop order, models are studied that have infrared conformal fixed points which related gauge and Yukawa couplings, allowing for a cancellation between seemingly unrelated quantum loop diagrams.

Advanced Multipoles for Accelerator Magnets: Theoretical Analysis and Their Measurement [Monograph]
Schnizer, Pierre \ 2017
Electronics - Magnetic materials - Magnetism - Microelectronics - Particle acceleration - Physics

Abstract:
This monograph presents research on the transversal beam dynamics of accelerators and evaluates and describes the respective magnetic field homogeneity. The widely used cylindrical circular multipoles have disadvantages for elliptical apertures or curved trajectories, and the book also introduces new types of advanced multipole magnets, detailing their application, as well as the numerical data and measurements obtained. The research presented here provides more precise descriptions of the field and better estimates of the beam dynamics. Moreover, the effects of field inhomogeneity can be estimated with higher precision than before. These findings are further elaborated to demonstrate their usefulness for real magnets and accelerator set ups, showing their advantages over cylindrical circular multipoles. The research findings are complemented with data obtained from the new superconducting beam guiding magnet models (SIS100) for the FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) project. Lastly, the book offers a comprehensive survey of error propagation in multipole measurements and an appendix with Mathematica scripts to calculate advanced magnetic coil designs.

Compact Representations for the Design of Quantum Logic [Monograph]
Niemann, Philipp \ Wille, Robert \ 2017
Physics - Computer science Mathematics - Quantum computers - Quantum physics - Spintronics - Quantum computing - Quantum logic

Abstract:
This book discusses modern approaches and challenges of computer-aided design (CAD) of quantum circuits with a view to providing compact representations of quantum functionality. Focusing on the issue of quantum functionality, it presents Quantum Multiple-Valued Decision Diagrams (QMDDs - a means of compactly and efficiently representing and manipulating quantum logic. For future quantum computers, going well beyond the size of present-day prototypes, the manual design of quantum circuits that realize a given (quantum) functionality on these devices is no longer an option. In order to keep up with the technological advances, methods need to be provided which, similar to the design and synthesis of conventional circuits, automatically generate a circuit description of the desired functionality. To this end, an efficient representation of the desired quantum functionality is of the essence. While straightforward representations are restricted due to their (exponentially) large matrix descriptions and other decision diagram-like structures for quantum logic suffer from not comprehensively supporting typical characteristics, QMDDs employ a decomposition scheme that more naturally models quantum systems. As a result, QMDDs explicitly support quantum-mechanical effects like phase shifts and are able to take more advantage of corresponding redundancies, thereby allowing a very compact representation of relevant quantum functionality composed of dozens of qubits. This provides the basis for the development of sophisticated design methods as shown for quantum circuit synthesis and verification.

Orthopedic surgery clerkship : a quick reference guide for senior medical students [Monograph]
Eltorai, Adam E. M. \ Eberson, Craig P. \ Daniels, Alan H. \ 2017
Orthopedic surgery

Abstract:
This quick-reference guide is the first book written specifically for the many third- and fourth-year medical students rotating on an orthopedic surgery service. Organized anatomically, it focuses on the diagnosis and management of the most common pathologic entities. Each chapter covers history, physical examination, imaging, and common diagnoses. For each diagnosis, the book sets out the typical presentation, options for non-operative and operative management, and expected outcomes. Chapters include key illustrations, quick-reference charts, tables, diagrams, and bulleted lists. Each chapter is co-authored by a senior resident or fellow and an established academic physician and is concise enough to be read in two or three hours. Students can read the text from cover to cover to gain a general foundation of knowledge that can be built upon when they begin their rotation, then use specific chapters to review a sub-specialty before starting a new rotation or seeing a patient with a sub-specialty attending. Practical and user-friendly, Orthopedic Surgery Clerkship is the ideal, on-the-spot resource for medical students and practitioners seeking fast facts on diagnosis and management. Its bullet-pointed outline format makes it a perfect quick-reference, and its content breadth covers the most commonly encountered orthopedic problems in practice.

Introduction to learning classifier systems [Monograph]
Urbanowicz, Ryan J.. \ Browne, Will N.. \ 2017
Learning classifier systems

Abstract:
This accessible introduction shows the reader how to understand, implement, adapt, and apply Learning Classifier Systems (LCSs) to interesting and difficult problems. The text builds an understanding from basic ideas and concepts. The authors first explore learning through environment interaction, and then walk through the components of LCS that form this rule-based evolutionary algorithm. The applicability and adaptability of these methods is highlighted by providing descriptions of common methodological alternatives for different components that are suited to different types of problems from data mining to autonomous robotics. The authors have also paired exercises and a simple educational LCS (eLCS) algorithm (implemented in Python) with this book. It is suitable for courses or self-study by advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in subjects such as Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, and Cybernetics, and by researchers, data analysts, and machine learning practitioners.

The human capital imperative : valuing your talent [Monograph] - 1st ed. 2017.
COPPIN, ALAN \ 2017
Human capital - Personnel management

Abstract:
"Alan Coppin is a rare individual. His experience and insight span private and public sectors, charities, and the Armed Forces. The vital importance of human capital is the thread which has bound all this together. His book is a rich gold mine of data, research, wisdom and anecdote." --Sir Gerry Grimstone, chairman of Standard Life, deputy chairman of Barclays, non-executive director of Deloitte and lead non-executive director at the Ministry of Defence In this new book Coppin and Marriott-Sims, leaders with extensive cross-sector experience, draw on discussions with leaders in the public and private sectors, as well as from charities, the military and trade unions to offer you the ideas and practical applications that have proved effective in ensuring human capital is properly valued and managed. Most business decisions are based on lag data - historical reporting of what happened last month, last quarter or last year. It's solid, real and comforting. Unfortunately, it's also not a very good indicator of what might happen next. The best lead data - information with genuine predictive power - comes from understanding your people and what they can deliver. All major organizations claim that people are their greatest asset and yet, at the first sign of problems, the first action they take is to fire people. Why, because employees are also an organisation's biggest liability in terms of cost - and their cost is much easier to quantify than their value. But, like any asset, human capital will only deliver its full value if it is properly understood, measured and managed. The authors offer you the tools you need to take the issue beyond the HR department and satisfy the number crunchers in the boardroom. With their help, you can make human capital part of the normal financial metrics essential to running a successful organisation. Isn't it time you understood and managed the metrics that can predict your organization's future rather than relying on those that simply report on its past?

Transport and NMR studies of charge glass in organic conductors with quasi-triangular lattices : doctoral thesis accepted by the University of Tokyo, Japan [Monograph]
Sato, Takuro \ 2017
Coulomb excitation - Lattice theory - Organic conductors

Abstract:
This thesis experimentally demonstrates the much discussed electronic charge-glass states in solids. It focuses on quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors of the [theta]-(BEDT-TTF)2X family, which form anisotropic triangular lattices, and examines their electronic properties using various measurements: resistivity, time-resolved electric transport, X-ray diffraction analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The hallmark of the charge glass caused by geometrical frustration of lattice structure for those materials is successfully observed for the first time. The thesis provides new insights into the exotic properties of matter driven by strong electron correlations and crystalline frustration. The introduction enables beginners to understand fundamentals of the charge-glass states and the organic-conductor family [theta]-(BEDT-TTF)2X. The comprehensive and detailed descriptions of the experimental demonstration make this a valuable resource.
