An Integrated Biomass Production and Conversion Process for Sustainable Bioenergy \ Sustainability [Article]

Abstract:
There is not enough land for the current bioenergy production process because of its low annual yield per unit land. In the present paper, an integrated biomass production and conversion process for sustainable bioenergy is proposed and analyzed. The wastes from the biomass conversion process, including waste water, gas and solid are treated or utilized by the biomass production process in the integrated process. Analysis of the integrated process including the production of water hyacinth and digestion for methane in a tropical area demonstrates several major advantages of the integrated process. (1) The net annual yield of methane per unit land can reach 29.0 and 55.6 km3/h for the present and future (2040) respectively, which are mainly due to the high yield of water hyacinth, high biomethane yield and low energy input. The land demand for the proposed process accounts for about 1% of the world’s land to meet the current global automobile fuels or electricity consumption; (2) A closed cycle of nutrients provides the fertilizer for biomass production and waste treatment, and thus reduces the energy input; (3) The proposed process can be applied in agriculturally marginal land, which will not compete with food production. Therefore, it may be a good alternative energy technology for the future.

Abstract:
The Utility Leaders Forum in 2017 catalysed discussions and partnerships between CEOs of local and international water and waste water utilities. The Utility Leaders Forum has the ambition to present new themes and to create new ways to develop solutions for the ambition and challenges utilities in major cities and high density living areas have. The Forum is about translating shared knowledge into action. In cooperation with the Global Water Leaders Group, the Forum created the opportunity to make the next step towards a better future for the performance of major water utilities. Ten CEOs of water utilities from major world cities presented their challenges and solutions. These utilities were brought together to discuss and share experiences of/with ‘city growths and investments’, ‘closing the water cycle’, ‘water and energy’ and ‘the role utilities have in city development’. All CEOs shared their experiences that could be useful to other water utilities and discussed what challenges they are facing in learning from others. Five CEOs were rewarded the ‘Leading Utilities of the World status’ by the Global Water Leaders Group for their successful performances of implementing water innovations.

Abstract:
Like the Netherlands, Oman faces huge challenges in the field of water management. Therefore an intensified relationship and cooperation with the Netherlands has been started a year ago. A mutual Taskforce was established to solve the water problems by learning from each other. This article describes the water challenges of Oman and highlights the recent developments in the cooperation between Oman and the Netherlands. Oman, just as the Netherlands, has an old tradition on water management. The centuries old falaj system to this day provides for example date palm cultivation and villages with water. With a sundial the gates of a sophisticated irrigation system are opened or closed. It is possible to buy or sell water rights if necessary. But also Oman has an extensive modern drinking water system based on desalination, a system of recharge and retention dams and reuses most of its waste water. In Oman living with water is, like in the Netherlands, of the utmost importance. Due to Climate Change, economic growth and a growing population maintaining an adequate supply of water for agricultural and domestic use is one of Oman’s most pressing issues. The article shows that, although the water situation in both countries differs, there are many possibilities to exchange knowledge and ideas in the field of water governance and water management. At the same time the article shows how such a cooperation process can be set up.

Dit rapport beschrijft de activiteiten en de resultaten van de eerste fase van het het project Supersludge. Supersludge is het acroniem voor dit ontwikkelingsproject dat een samenwerking is van het waterschap Aa en Maas, het waterschap de Dommel, Procede Biomass bv uit Enschede, Electron Thermal Processing Equipment BV uit Nijkerk en N.V. Slibverwerking Noord-Brabant (SNB) te Moerdijk. Het uiteindelijke doel van dit project is de realisatie en het bedrijven van een installatie voor de superkritische vergassing van zuiveringsslib om de waarde van deze technologie voor de verwerking van zuiveringsslib te demonstreren.

In dit proefschrift wordt een nieuwe methode gepresenteerd voor het terugwinnen en opwaarderen van carboxylaten uit waterige (afval) stromen. Eerst worden de carboxylaten uit de waterige stroom gehaald met behulp van een anionenwisselaar, waarna de verdere opwaardering tot esters volgt. Twee verschillende opties worden besproken: de alkylering met dimethylcarbonaat (Hoofdstuk 2) en de desorptie met CO2-geëxpandeerde alcoholen (Hoofdstuk 3-5).

Given its breadth of coverage, the book will be useful to researchers, teachers, students, administrators, planners, farmers and entrepreneurs interested in the profitable use of wastewater in the wastes-into-wealth framework of for the benefit of humanity, and in achieving the targets for sanitation and safe wastewater reuse by 2030, specified in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Concerns are growing about the quality and quantity of fresh water, as severe crises are expected in the near future. Climate change has further worsened the strain on inland water resources, with its major impacts on ecosystems and human life. It is most urgent to protect and conserve inland water resources to maintain vital ecosystem functions. Despite the immense nutrient potentials of wastewater in terms of phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium and increasingly high rates of urbanization-based wastewater generation, wastewater has traditionally been overlooked as a resource. This produces a threefold loss – environmental degradation, monetary losses from fertilizers, and water. As a result, municipal wastewater offers a win-win strategy for water conservation and environmental protection, while also turning waste into wealth in the form of fish biomass and allied cash crops. Wastewater-fed aquaculture refers to a unique, integrated biosystem in which the wastes generated by the first system are used by the next subsystem. In wastewater-fed aquaculture biosystems, the organic wastes are recycled into fish biomass mediated through a complex microbial/autotrophic/heterotrophic food web mechanism. .

Abstract:
In light of the intended wide application of advanced treatment steps, there is a need for an overview of the available knowledge on existing regulations driving mitigation and monitoring efforts in the EU. Here, we focus on emerging compounds and their transformation products. More specifically, we explore potential consequences of applying ozonation as a technological intervention on a large scale. We discuss how this treatment upstream may have benefits but also drawbacks for the receiving areas downstream. From this overview, research questions are identified.
