This volume explores specific approaches that have shown to result in crop yield increases. Research on the physiological understanding of these methods has led to the development of practical applications of plant breeding approaches to genetically improve crops to achieve higher yields. Authoritative entries from crop scientists shed new light on two water-conservation traits: one that is based on an initiation of the decrease in transpiration earlier in the soil drying cycle, and the second that is based on a sensitivity of transpiration rate under high atmospheric vapor pressure deficit that results in partial stomatal closure. Both these approaches involve partial stomatal closure under well-defined situations to decrease the rate of soil water loss. Readers will be able to analyze the circumstances under which a benefit is achieved as a result of the water-limitation trait; and key discussion points in the case studies presented will help answer questions such as what species, which environments, how often will yield be benefited for various crop species? Contributions also review the genetic variation for these two traits within each crop species and the physiological basis for the expression of these traits.

There is a huge potential for yield increase of agricultural crop residues and biomass from forestry in the European Union, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. A stepwise approach was used to identify the realistic potential in these regions, starting with an estimate of the theoretical potential based on crop- and forest-type specific best practices for yield increase, which is then narrowed down to a technical-sustainable potential. Ecofys developed and assessed best practice strategies for residue yield increase with regard to their feasibility of application in the EU, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus.

Het Landbouwcentrum Granen (LCG) legde dit jaar op 9 plaatsen rassenproeven voor wintertarwe aan. Hoewel een moment noodrijpheid werd gevreesd wegens de droogte, kon de regen bijna overal voor een zeer behoorlijke opbrengst zorgen. De gemiddelde opbrengst van de getuigenrassen was op de meeste plaatsen hoger dan ooit.

The ILUC Prevention project aimed at providing insights into how ILUC (risks) can be mitigated by taking a sustainable approach to all crop production for all purposes, how this can be quantified and how ILUC (mitigation) may be regulated. Key ILUC prevention measures (e.g. above-baseline yield increases and cultivation of currently under-utilized land) were quantified for four case studies by assessing how much additional biofuel feedstock can be produced with low risk of causing ILUC. Key results from case studies: Large biofuel potentials with low risk of causing ILUC exist in all case studies.

Op een proefveld in Bree, dat door de Bodemkundige Dienst van België (BDB) werd opgevolgd in samenwerking met de Vlaamse Landmaatschappij (VLM), bleek dat het beregenen van aardappelen in 2013 tot meeropbrengsten leidde. In het buitenland is het kruislings poten allang niet meer bijzonder. Maar in Nederland houden de meeste pootgoedtelers vast aan de traditionele teelt van een enkele rij in ruggen op 75 cm van elkaar. Marcel Nijenhuis is een uitzondering. Hij past de techniek al vier jaar met succes toe en schat de meeropbrengst op 10 procent.

Om de rentabiliteit van snij-amaryllis ( Hippeastrum ) te verbeteren is onderzoek uitgevoerd naar productieverhoging voor de kerstbloei. In een kas van 600 m2 is een teeltstrategie toegepast gericht op optimalisatie van de fotosynthese met verneveling en een diffuus schermdoek. De productie was vergelijkbaar tot iets hoger dan gemiddeld in de praktijk, maar lager dan verwacht door een tragere doorgroei tot bloeibare knop en toename van achterblijvende bollen. Geoogste bloemstelen bleken 10 tot 22 maanden voor de oogst aangelegd. De oudste knoppen zijn het meest gevoelig voor knopverdroging. Verhoging van de bodemtemperatuur van 22 naar 24o C vanaf het vroege voorjaar tot de start van de koeling gaf meer Fusarium en geen productieverbetering ten opzichte van continu 22o C. Op perliet was de productie iets hoger dan op kleikorrels. De cultivar Mont Blanc gaf minder bloemstelen, maar een hoger steelgewicht dan Red Lion. Omdat productieverhoging van een enkele bol lastig is, zal productieverhoging vooral moeten komen uit een vermindering van achterblijvers en gezond houden van de bollen.
