A package of simulation models has been developed to study the hydrological processes controlling water availability and its use in the Andean region. The models describe snowmelt run-off in the higher elevation zones, rainfall run-off and erosion in the piedmont, and the interaction between the irrigation infrastructure and the groundwater system in the alluvial plain. Satellite remote sensing was applied to obtain part of the input data necessary, and GIS techniques were developed and applied to handle input and output data.
