Abstract Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) prove to be powerful tools for predicting soil hydraulic characteristics from basic soil properties. PTFs have the advantage over direct measurement techniques that they are inexpensive and easy to use. Accuracy of predictions for many applications on regional and national scales is appropriate. PTFs must not be used to make predictions for soils outside the range of soils used to derive them. So, use of PTFs for interpolation purposes is safe, but unwise in case of extrapolation. Since PTFs are as good as the original measured data from which they were derived periodical updating is a necessity.
