Abstract A study of the role of stagnant zones in hydrodynamic dispersion was presented for creeping flow through a fixed bed of spherical permeable particles, covering several orders of characteristic time and length scales associated with fluid transport. The numerical simulations employed hierarchical model with a single free parameter to cope with the large variety of spatial and temporal scales. The results showed the dominating contribution of liquid holdup to transient and asymptotic longitudinal dispersion and were found to be in good agreement with experimental data.
