Abstract Conjoint analysis was performed in the Dutch dairy chain to obtain the relative contribution to increased food safety of more than 100 attributes. Results from the conjoint analysis show among others that 'chemical hazards procedures and instructions for compound feed production' and 'quality assurance system of animal feed ingredient manufacturers' are perceived as the most important food safety attributes in the feed stage. For the farm stage, the most important attributes are 'identification of treated cows in the milking parlour' and 'quality assurance system of compound feed manufacturers'. For the dairy processing stage, the most important attributes are 'sourcing raw milk at the dairy processing factory' and 'delivered raw milk identification and traceability'.
