Abstract De schimmel kan bladeren, stengels, groeipunten en vruchten aantasten en veroorzaakt hierop bruine of grijzige vlekken. De schimmel wordt met verschillende namen aangeduid: Didymella bryoniae, Phoma cucurbitacearum en Mycosphaerella citrullina en M. melonis. De schimmel overleeft de winter voornamelijk in zieke plantresten. De schimmel heeft resistentie ontwikkeld tegen diverse middelen dievoorheen zeer effectief waren. Anno 2004 zijn er geen middelen diede ziekte in hoge mate kunnen voorkomen of bestrijden
