Abstract This report provides a review on the current status and trends observed in the field of genetic modification of trees. Based on a literature review and the consultation of relevant researchers, it further provides an overview of potential environmental risks related to the deliberate release of transgenic trees into the environment. The report focuses on differences between crops and trees and identifies the potential risks of introducing transgenic trees in the Netherlands.
