Abstract New innovative remediation practices are currently being developed that address phosphorus transfers from soils and applied sources to surface and ground waters. These practices include reactive barriers placed along field ditches and drainage ways, retention filters at the end of tile drains, materials blended with land-applied phosphorus sources (e.g., manures), and amendments designed to decrease phosphorus release by the soil solid phase. This session will define the state of the science on different non-point source phosphorus sorbing technologies and highlight their overall effectiveness. Perspective will be gained on the costs and benefits of such approaches as well as their suitability in the environment.
