Abstract It has been demonstrated previously that the mean received signal from optical and microwave links can be related to the average rain rate over the signal path. This presentation will focus on the information concerning the fine-scale structure of rainfall contained in received signal fluctuations from optical and microwave links. It will be demonstrated that such fluctuations can be related to spatial rainfall variations along the link at a given moment in time as well as to temporal variations of the mean rain rate along the link. These variations in turn are fingerprints of the space-time variability of the raindrop size distribution. As such, measurements of signal fluctuations from optical and microwave links provide a rich source of information concerning the fine-scale structure of precipitation.
