Abstract De sterke positie van de Nederlandse veredelaars in de wereld is niet uit de lucht komen vallen. In Nederland bestond er al vroeg een scheiding tussen overheid en veredelingsbedrijven. De bedrijven ontwikkelden nieuwe rassen, de overheid ondersteunde dat door onderzoek te financieren. Terwijl in andere landen veredeling van nieuwe rassen lang bij overheidsinstellingen lag.
