Abstract The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reports on behalf of the Netherlands to the European Union about radioactivity in the environment. Radioactivity levels in food and milk were well below the export and consumption limits set by the European Union. The activity concentration in surface water was in some locations above the target values from the Vierde Nota waterhuishouding (1998). However, these exceeded values do not pose a threat to public health. Target values are values that should preferably not be exceeded but they are not limits as such.
