Abstract Development of accurate identification tools for plant pathogens, including viruses, is vital to support European Plant Health Policies. The FP7 funded Collaborative research project ‘QBOL’ aims at developing generic species identification methods through generating ‘Barcode sequences’ for Quarantine listed pathogens from all major plant pathogen groups like insects, fungi, bacteria, nematodes, invasive plant species and plant viruses. A separate work package within QBOL focuses on plant viruses. Identification of true generic bar code regions for all plant viruses is not possible because virus genomes are too divers between different genera and even species. For this reason a different approach was designed that explores the possibilities of new deep-sequencing technologies for identification of (quarantine) plant viruses
