Abstract Increasing human population, economic challenges, climate change impacts are intensifying reliance by local communities on savanna woodlands in tropical regions. Knowledge of the importance and value of savanna woodland ecosystems to rural livelihoods and wildlife conservation is therefore needed to enhance lasting benefits from them. Savanna woodlands are of economic, social and ecological importance in southeastern Zimbabwe. Recommendations for conserving woodland resources include the strengthening of control systems and enhancing community based natural resource management programmes.
