Abstract Planning scholars in the US and in Europe explore the contours of an emerging field of sustainable food systems. Tiny fragments of the complex food cycle have been covered so far. Planning literature is currently focusing on production processing and retail, leaving consumption of food and treatment of waste still largely unexplored. This chapter sets out to explore the state of the art. The research builds on data colected in a survey of international scientific planning journals over a period of a decade (1999-2010). Preliminary conclusions were reviewed by and discussed with a panel of international food planning experts. This chapter outlines ways to bridge the contested middle-ground between conventional de-localised and alternative re-localised agri-food systems
