Abstract This study investigated whether extending the natural photoperiod with different colours of artificial light influences the biological clock and body functions of dairy cows. This study shows that the biological clock of dairy cows is relatively insensitive to red light. In comparison with red artificial light, photoperiod extensions with other light colours have differential effects on the dairy cow.
