The concept of a Europe of Regions entails that the various regions strengthen their own cultural and regional identity within a unifi ed Europe. ‘Unity in Diversity’ is the motto and cultural heritage and regional identity are important pillars. But what does really happen in the many projects that Europe subsidizes and in which regions are challenged to make their heritage subservient to ‘Europeanisation’ in general and the strengthening of their own identity in particular? Does the heritage in these projects mainly contribute to the unity or to the diversity? This question is pursued with an analysis of ideological, strategic and territorial claims on heritage.
