Abstract The current study describes the development and use of a new expert model iDRIFT to estimate downwind deposits of spray drift for field sprayers. The expert model is presented as a versatile and easy-to-use software tool for both simple and advanced situations. Users can adjust various essential parameters at will, and the model responds instantly without noticeable delay. Adjustable parameters include weather conditions, field conditions, sprayer selection and spray application procedure. The model uses a generic drift function to compute drift data. This function is derived by multiple linear regression analysis from the results of an extensive set of random scenarios computed using the IDEFICS spray drift model. The latter model has been experimentally validated thoroughly. Therefore the iDRIFT model has the potential to become a useful tool for quantifying and evaluating possible spray drift hazards for a wide range of realistic situations in field spraying.
