Abstract Modelling Trade-offs between Erosion Prevention and Other Ecosystem Services using the Landscape IMAGES Framework

Semi-natural habitats such as grasslands, bush lands and other vegetation patches found within or bordering agricultural fields in a watershed are highly important in providing various ecosystem services such as biological pest control, pollination and erosion prevention. The EU FP7-funded QuESSA (Quantification of Ecological Services for Sustainable Agriculture) project was initiated to explore synergies and trade-offs among ecosystem services from semi-natural habitats in European landscapes. The Landscape IMAGES (LI) modelling framework is used to analyse trade-offs between various ecosystem services by applying multi-objective optimization on heuristically generated land-use alternatives. Analysis of trade-offs between landscape-level erosion prevention and other ecosystem services associated with semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes in Europe was simulated using LI. The tool may be of interest for similar applications of trade-offs analysis between ecosystem services in other parts of the world.
