The EAGLE concept embodies a new approach for land monitoring initiatives following an object-oriented approach in landscape modelling. It aims at providing a basis for an integrated European Land Monitoring Framework. Once implemented, the EAGLE concept with its data model and tools can help to harmonize and make comparable different LC/LU classification systems on national and European level. Also, it can provide guidance for mapping initiatives and field campaigns to describe landscape in an applicationneutral manner by the descriptive decomposition of the landscape instead of classification. The EAGLE concepts target is after all the pan-European dimension, but also can be broadened up to be check on the dimension of global test beds.
