Abstract The attention for local food production and urban agriculture initiatives is developing rapidly in northwest Europe. Food is increasingly connected to identity and seen as more than just a product to consume; it is about lifestyle, fashion, attitudes, status and politics. Similarly, urban agriculture is more than food production; it is also about delivering services and goods to society. Urban agriculture is considered to contribute to, for example, employment, biodiversity, waste management and education. Therefore, urban agriculture presents an opportunity for cities and has become a new object of study for architects, urban planners and artists. This presentation covered how urban agriculture projects are developing in several cities in Northwest Europe (London, Helsinki, Malmö, Almere, Berlin and of course, Aarhus) and the challenges involved to facilitate a sustainable food production in cities were discussed.
