Abstract Keynote: Smallholder farmers in Africa are often unable to profit from the enormous genetic gains made in crop varieties and other yield-improving technologies. Using the example of N2Africa – a multi-country, multi-scale, multi-partner project ommitted to enabling African farmers to garner the multiple benefits of nitrogen fixing grain legumes – I will explore the constraints and opportunities that farmers face. Technology only becomes a true innovation in agriculture when it meets the needs and constraints of farmers – leading to the conclusion “it’s all about context”!
