Abstract The effect of light (intensity, duration and spectral composition), temperature (different day and night temperature) and water (different humidities of the soil and the air) on flowering of groundnut Arachis hypogaea L. var. Schwarz 21) was investigated. Because growth and fruit formation were also influenced by these factors, the relation between growth, flowering and fruiting was the allied problem investigated. Defoliation suppressed flowering: no antagonism was found between growth and flowering. Removal of pegs and fruits promoted flowering which was suppressed by developing fruits.
The initiation of flowers was independent of photoperiodism and of thermoperiodicity and could not be regulated. The formation of leaves and inflorescences were almost inseparable. The opening of flower buds and the total number of flowers formed were highly dependent on external conditions. Hence flower bud initiation was less sensitive to external conditions than the actual flowering.

The experiments gave a better insight into the physiology of flowering, which could be regulated now, more or less, at will. An abundant or poor flowering could be obtained; the opening of flowers could be delayed, prevented or continued 'indefinitely'; in this way almost any number of opened flowers could be obtained at any time of the year or the day.
