Abstract The dairy sector plays an important role in the Kenyan economy. Farmers are becoming more market-oriented in their production strategies, yet the quality of the raw milk reaching the market is not improving. In the absence of appropriate market governance, and institutions capable of ensuring that milk is produced to the quality standards required by the dairy industry, poor quality milk has become a bottleneck to development of the formal value chain, and the growth and expansion of the vibrant and dynamic dairy sector in Kenya, undermining its ability to access profitable higher-end markets, within and beyond its national borders.
