Wageningen : Wageningen Environmental Research (Wageningen Environmental Research rapport 2944) - 81
A healthy soil is crucial for mankind. In order to be able to assess soil health, soil health must first be quantified. This can be done on the basis of assessing a limited number of physical, chemical and biological indicators. This report describes how, on the basis of literature research, it is determined which indicators are most suitable for determining soil health. The influence of prevailing environmental variables is also described. Finally, five recommendations are made.
Natuurinclusief voor een goede toekomst : wat valt te leren van Hoeve Stein als voorbeeld van zelfrealisatie van natuur?
Westerink, Judith ; Melman, Dick ; Schrijver, Raymond ; Schotman, Alex ; Visser, Tim - \ 2019
Wageningen : Wageningen Environmental Research (Wageningen Environmental Research rapport 2948) - 89
The dairy farm Hoeve Stein was converted from a conventional into an organic nature-oriented farm. This was the result of a close collaboration between the farming family, the province, the municipality and the State Forest Service. Important building blocks were the buy-off of the devaluation of the land, solid advisory reports on the business model and the ecology, and experimentation with nature management. This report reviews the development of the farm and its ecological values. In addition, it investigates whether farmers in the neighbourhood consider Hoeve Stein as good example that is worth following, as was the intention of the project.

Wageningen : Wageningen Environmental Research (Rapport / Wageningen Environmental Research 2946) - 47
In this project the effect of regular maintenance of road-verges and natural maintenance of the “Poelzone” on populations of pestinsects, their natural enemies and host plants has been studied. In the studies locations in the Poelzone the number of hostplants, natural enemies, pest species and neutral herbivores is slightly higher than in the regular managed road verges. The number of pest thrips individuals is lower than the number of neutral thrips species, but total numbers of thrips are higher in the regular managed verges. Pest species and natural enemies have been found on various host plant species, often on similar species. Thrips species and their natural enemies reach their maximum occurrence simultaneously. The studied locations along water banks have similar insect populations but are relatively rich in early flowering species. The studies locations in the Poelzone seem to have a slightly better balance between pest and regulating species compared to locations in regular managed road verges, but differences are small and in both management types pest species have been found. Suggestions for further research have been presented.

The Dutch forest reserves network : Documentation of monitoring design and databases
Bijlsma, R.J. ; Clerkx, A.P.P.M. - \ 2019
Wageningen : Wageningen Environmental Research (Wageningen Environmental Research report 2940) - 35
The Dutch forest reserves network was officially created by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (now Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) in 1987. A total of 60 forest reserves were designated for inclusion in the network between 1983 and 2000. In 2018, one reserve was excluded from the network. Firstly, this report presents general information on the distribution, area, ownership, physical geography, woodland types, Natura 2000 woodland habitat types, and the management history of the reserves. After this, the monitoring design is described, which includes measurements taken from trees, and regeneration, in circular sample plots throughout the reserves, and in a one hectare rectangular core area in each reserve. The structure of the Access-database of tree measurements is presented, and all tables documented. An overview is given of GIS files at the network- and reserve levels, and of GIS files derived from tree measurements in core areas. All these data are available from the Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) portal.

Climate risk assessment services for agri-food sector
Groot, A. ; Bruin, K. de; Bolt, J. ; Verwey, P. ; Daniels, E. ; Hutjes, R. - \ 2019
Wageningen : Wageningen Environmental Research (Wageningen Environmental Research report ) - 51
Climate change and climate variability pose high risks to the agri-food business as it threatens ecosystems and impacts the natural capital on which companies depend. Agri-food companies have already suffered weather–related impacts in recent years, and most have seen an intensification of such impacts. Meanwhile, farming- and other communities on which the agri-food businesses depend for their supplies of agricultural commodities, raw materials and work force are also highly affected. Recognizing the problem, identifying climate related risks in the supply chain and responding with adaptation measures can help agri-food businesses to minimize their risks and strengthen resilience. Responding to the effects of climate change will also provide opportunities for innovative climate resilient products and services and open up new markets. For example, insurance agencies are already developing innovative climate-insurance products for communities at increased risk of weather-related natural disasters. New water-use efficient irrigation technologies are being developed and deployed to address increased water stress. This report describes a set of services WEnR can deliver to assist stakeholders in an agri-food chain to assess climatic risks and potential adaptation strategies to mitigate these risks. These services include development of regionalised / bias corrected climate change projections, climate change impact assessments, assessment of climate /weather related risks, assessment of potential business cases mitigating climatic risks. The services i.e. climate risk assessment described in this report are current being delivered in the Climate Smart Agriculture - East Africa project, but do have wider application opportunities as being described in the last chapter.

In the Netherlands hundreds of initiatives focus on advancing pollinators. In this study we looked at 12 initiatives, to gain insight in their success and failure factors. The research shows that initiatives sometimes operate individually, or are connected to a regional network, aimed at pollinators. More could be achieved if a link is made between these social networks and ecological networks for pollinators. The most common measure is sowing one-year mixtures of indigenous and exotic flowers, while pollinators benefit mainly from perennial, native species. Knowledge transfer can further increase the effectiveness of initiatives. The potential of government and agricultural land can also be further increased to promote pollinators.
