Voor evaluaties van het Mestbeleid is de hydrologie van het STONE-instrumentarium geactualiseerd. Het betreft aanpassing van de volgende invoerparameters: meteorologische gegevens, bodemfysische parameters, landgebruik, verdampings-eigenschappen, lekweerstanden en ontwateringsbasis. De koppeling tussen de 6405, met SWAP gemodelleerde, plotmodellen en het met NAGROM gemodelleerd regionaal grondwatersysteem is in STONE 2.3 sterk verbeterd. De resultaten zijn geanalyseerd en vergeleken met de hydrologie voor STONE 2.1, en met metingen. Drains wordt doorgaans gebruikt voor het afvoeren van overtollig water. De onderwaterdrains kunnen echter ook gebruikt worden om water aan te voeren (infiltratie). Door de dubbele functie van de drains ontstaat een grondwaterregiem met een relatief lage hoogste grondwaterstand en een relatief hoge laagste grondwaterstand. Hierdoor wordt oxidatie van veen in de zomermaanden zoveel mogelijk tegengegaan, terwijl het landbouwkundig beheer niet negatief wordt beïnvloed dankzij een lagere grondwaterstand vroeg in het voorjaar. Deze proef bekijkt op verschillende locaties (Zegveld, Linschoten en in polder Zeevang) wat het effect is van de onderwaterdrainsdrains op de grondwaterstanden en de maaiveldligging

To facilitate crop growth excess water should be drained from the rooting zone to allow root development of the crop and from the soil surface to facilitate access to the field. Basically, there are three drainage methods from which the designer can select being; surface drains, pumped tube wells and horizontal pipe drains. The selection between these techniques is not very straightforward and depends to a certain extend on the preferences of the designer. Yet, guidance is given in this paper on the basis of a set of questions that are grouped in a flowchart. Although the flowchart suggests sharp choices between alternative drainage methods, in reality the choice between the recommended methods overlaps. Partly this is because the values in the selection criteria (questions) are indicative. Further overlap is caused by the construction and operation and maintenance cost of the drainage system under local conditions. These costs are not included in the flowchart.

Drainage water salinity data from 71 public deep tubewells and 79 pipe drainage units near Faisalabad, Pakistan, were studied. Drainage water salinity of the tubewells and the pipe drains remained approximately constant with time. This was attributed to the deep, highly conductive, unconfined aquifer underlying the area, which facilitates lateral groundwater inflow into the drained areas. Tubewells alongside surface drains showed average electrical conductivity, sodium adsorption ratio, and residual sodium carbonate values of 3.2 dS m-1, 17.2 (meq l-1)(0*5), and 6.4 meq 1-1, respectively. For pipe drains, which are situated in areas with comparable conditions, the corresponding values were 2.5dS m--1, 12.2 (meql-J)°5, and 3.7meq 1-1, respectively. Tubewells have an inferior drainage water quality because they attract water from greater depths, where the water is more saline.

To assess the drainable surplus of an irrigated area, a methodology based on a groundwater-balance approach was developed and applied in Schedule I-B of the Fourth Drainage Project near Faisalabad in Pakistan. To determine the seasonal net recharge in this area, a numerical groundwater model was run in inverse mode. The data input for the model consisted of the geometry of the aquifer system, the aquifer parameters, and historical watertable elevations. The seasonal net recharge values, calculated from the individual recharge and discharge components, were "tuned" with the results of the inverse modelling. The advantage of such an integrated approach is that all these components are linked. The design net recharge was estimated from the historical net recharge of the wettest monsoon in the study period. Its rainfall recharge values were then substituted for those of a design monsoon. In this substitution procedure, the rainfall recharge methodology and parameters were adopted from the tuning procedure. From this design net recharge, estimates could be made of the required drainable surplus, with and without drainage simulation.

Om inzicht te verkrijgen in de verdroging door rijksinfrastructuur is in een GIS een methode ontwikkeld. Bij de methode is gebruik gemaakt van een aantal fasen. In de eerste fase is met gebruikmaking van de spreidingslengte het potentiële invloedsgebied van infrastructuur bepaald. Vervolgens zijn selecties gemaakt om de infrastructuur die verdroging tot gevolg heeft te selecteren. Voor de geselecteerde infrastructuur zijn de verdrogingseffecten bepaald met gebruikmaking van analytische formules. De methode is na enige aanpassing toe te passen voor geheel Nederland. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat verdroging door infrastructuur in de provincies Gelderland en Overijssel een beperkte omvang heeft.

<p>The water acceptance of subsurface, agricultural pipe drains is largely determined by the hydraulic conductivity of the surrounding zone. If this zone consists of soil with a poor structural stability, such drains must be wrapped with an envelope to control the rate of pipe sedimentation while safeguarding easy access of water. The studies were made to elicidate the effects of envelope specifications on these requirements.<p>Envelope response was observed in analogue models, for cohesionless, and weakly cohesive, very fine sandy soils. Cohesionless soils were stabilised best by "thin" envelopes. Water access was easy and was not a factor of importance in design. In weakly-cohesive soils, the capability of envelopes to meet the requirements was quantified using an "Envelope Suitability Index" (ESI). Both soil type and envelope type had a significant effect on ESI. Nevertheless, analogue model tests were of limited value because the findings could not be compared with field observations.<p>A field survey was made of grade lines of 184 drains and of soil invasion and sedimentation patterns, root penetration and other phenomena in these drains. They were wrapped with various envelope types and installed in weakly-cohesive, very fine sandy soils in three experimental fields in The Netherlands. Over 9600 m of drain length were inspected. The rate of pipe sedimentation differed significantly between the experimental fields. The particle retention capability of envelopes was associated with the effective opening size of their pores, "O <sub>90</sub> ". The mechanisms of soil invasion into drains and the observed sedimentation rates differed from those predicted in analogue models. Generally, envelope specification had no significant effect on drainage resistance; only in cases where drains were also used for subirrigation did "voluminous" envelopes have significantly lower drainage resistances than "thin" ones.<p>Cores, containing wrapped drain sections with the surrounding soil were sampled at 45 locations. All sections had been functioning in weakly-cohesive, fine-sandy soils for a period of 5 years. The effect of soil and envelope specification on the flow of soil particles near the drains was investigated by microgranulometric analysis. Generally, the finest soil particles were found to be concentrated near the soil/envelope interface. This tendency was largely accounted for by the particle size distribution of the soil. A "natural soil filter" had only developed in a few instances. The envelopes improve stability through supporting the soils rather than through acting as filters. The cores were also examined by x-ray computerised tomography (CT) through 50 adjacent slices. This yielded three dimensional (3D) mappings of the most permeable areas inside the drain envelopes and surrounding soils that convey most of the water to the drains. A finite element model was used to study the effect of radial soil heterogeneity around a subsurface drain on the water table height. Water flow and envelope clogging were found to be quite heterogeneous and were mainly determined by soil structural features. Soil structural stability is therefore the main determinant of the service life of wrapped drains. The physical effect of an envelope on physical soil/envelope interactions is less important than is generally assumed. On the contrary, soil properties are crucial.
