The Dutch Institute for Marine Resources & Ecosystem Studies (IMARES) has been participating in the international North Sea acoustic survey for herring since 1991. Participants in this survey are Scotland, Norway, Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands and Ireland. The survey is part of the EU data collection framework (DCF) and is coordinated by the ICES Working Group for International Pelagic Surveys (WGIPS, formerly PGIPS/PGHERS). The aim of this survey is to provide an abundance estimate of the whole North Sea herring population. This estimate is used as a tuning index by the ICES Herring Assessment Working Group (HAWG) in its assessment of the population size. In this report the results are presented for the survey in the central North Sea, carried out by the Dutch vessel R/V Tridens.

In the period September 2011 to January 2012 three herring larvae surveys were carried out by ‘RV Tridens’. In September, the Buchan area and Central North Sea were sampled and in December and January the southern North Sea and the Eastern channel. The weather conditions during the September and December surveys were mostly good and all planned stations could be sampled. In January due to bad weather conditions and engine problems some stations could not be sampled. During all surveys good coverage of the entire sampling area was achieved.

Additional Request On North Sea Herring Long Term Management Plan Evaluation

Under the current Long Term Management Plan of North Sea herring the stakeholders are concerned that the inter-annual TAC constraint is preventing the stock from being exploited at the maximum sustainable yield. Therefore, ICES was requested by the EU and Norway to evaluate, by 31 October 2011, the impact on the performance of the plan in relation to the objectives of providing sustainable fisheries with stable yield in conformity with the precautionary approach under different harvest control rules

At the request of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institut (vTI), IOR Rostock, a return review of the German Rügen herring larval survey (RHLS) project took place on the 24th to 26th January 2011, following on from a similar review in November 2006. Mark Dickey-Collas (Wageningen IMARES) and Richard D.M. Nash (IMR, Norway) lead the review. This report represents the opinions of these two external reviewers. The current aim of the programme is to maintain and develop the time series of ichthyoplankton surveys in the spring and summer in the Greifswalder Bodden and stimulate spin off research. The review was designed to address the role of the survey in the framework of providing both management advice and research outputs. The external reviewers were given documents on the current survey. They also viewed presentations from research students and staff on their work and the proposed direction of the programme. The review included a “brainstorming” session on future research and potential gaps in the project.

There is growing concern among fishermen about the migration of North Sea herring into the Norwegian Sea. The Pelagic Freezer-trawler Association therefore commissioned IMARES to develop a technique to monitor possible catches of North Sea herring in the Norwegian Sea. This technique will use morphometric (shape) differences in herring to distinguish between Norwegian Sea spawning herring and North Sea herring. The results show that the model is able to distinguish Norwegian spring spawning herring from North Sea autumn or winter spawning herring. Overall we can conclude that even though we still have to overcome some methodological problems we are confident that this research constitutes a first step towards developing a technique to monitor catches of herring from the Norwegian Sea for Norwegian Spring spawning or other herring.

Fish traders and NGOs have put the idea forward that in order to not disturb the spawning process and hence improve the reproductive success of a fish population one should stop fishing during the spawning period. This idea has resulted in the project “Vis & Seizoen”. Within this project a theoretical framework is being developed to examine the possible effect of fishing during the spawning season. This is the first report within the project. It presents a summary of the life history characteristics that are related to the reproduction of nine important commercial fish species.

Investigating the possibility of North Sea Herring spawning stock biomass rebuilding within a short timeframe

The potential for the rebuilding of the North Sea herring spawning biomass to above precautionary limit biomass reference points (1.3 million tonnes) was explored by a short term forecast applying different recruitment trends and productivities and the current management agreement between the EU and Norway. This was carried out, so that the PFA could consider rebuilding the herring stock to above 1.3 million tonnes.

Three biological materials have been prepared for IVM, Free University, Amsterdam to be used in QUASIMEME interlaboratory studies. The materials prepared are: 300 glass jars of homogenized Mediterranean mussels (QM06-1), 280 tins of homogenized blue mussels from German Bight (QM06-3) and 300 tins of homogenized Baltic herring fillets (QO06-4) The homogeneity test of the Mediterranean-mussel material (QM06-1) was performed by analysing mercury concentration and it was confirmed that the material is homogeneous.
