The aim of this report is to provide EFSA with probabilistic models for quantitative pathway analysis of plant pest introduction for the EU territory through non-edible plant products or plants. We first provide a conceptualization of two types of pathway models. The individual based PM simulates an individual consignment (or a population of such consignment) by describing the stochastic change in the state of the individual consignment over time and space. The flow-based PM, simulates the flow of infested product over time and space, without distinguishing individual consignments. We show how these two conceptualisations are mathematically related, and present, as a show case, both models for cut flowers. Second, we developed PMs for five product groups: round wood, sawn wood, cut flowers, plants for planting and seeds. For each product group we have developed a case-study (combination of product, origin and pest) to illustrate the use of the pathway models: (1) oak wood from the USA and Ceratocystis fagacearum, (2) Coniferous sawn wood from China and Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, (3) Cut orchids from Thailand and Thrips palmi, (4) Pot orchids from Thailand and Thrips palmi, and (5) Tomato seeds and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis from outside the European Union. An uncertainty analysis on the models shows that the pest species-specific parameters appear to be sensitive and uncertain. Third, a practical guidance is provided on i) how to develop a PM, ii) the application of PMs in @Risk (a plugin for MS Excel), and iii) application in R. Finally, future research topics are defined. Further work is needed on interpretation of results, linking quantitative outcomes of pathway modelling to pest risk scoring guidance, and evaluation of management options using pathway models.

The EU-funded Integrated Project “NovelQ” was designed to stimulate innovations in novel food processing and packaging. In this project, integrated strategic solutions for technical and basic research hurdles have been formulated for complex, real food products rather than food constituents. Enhancements to the state-of-the-art in novel processes focused on high pressure processing (HPP) for preservation of food, quantitative studies on the effect of pulsed electrical fields (PEF) on food pathogens and cold plasma as a surface disinfecting method. Other innovative topics included coupling of new packaging concepts to novel processing and solving R&D hurdles in implementation of advanced heating technologies. Key scientific emphasis has been placed on plant-based products, both solid and liquids, including carrot, tomato, strawberry, apple and broccoli. These commodities were selected because they integrate (i) food structure issues, (ii) colour and flavour-related aspects, (iii) health-related components, including allergens, and (iv) food safety issues. However, the results have broad applicability to other type of products, to the level of whole meals – including regional recipes that are typical of the rich and diverse European cuisine. To most effectively address these opportunities, further knowledge on consumer perception is crucial and therefore studied in NovelQ.

This paper evaluates the impact of a possible rise of the VAT rate applied to ornamentals on turnover and employment in the ornamental supply chain. The lower VAT rate is currently applied to flowers and plants in 13 EU member states. The current study considers two scenarios: 1. application of the general (high) tariff to ornamentals in the Netherlands; 2. application of the general tariff in all 13 members where the general tariff is not applied to at this momnet.

Background: Antioxidants in plant foods have been proposed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) by reducing oxidative stress. The objective was to confirm prospective studies on CVD and traditional antioxidants (beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol), and to investigate emerging antioxidants (alpha-carotene, gamma-tocopherol, cocoa flavanols), and oxidative stress (enzyme activity of glutathione peroxidase-3) with CVD risk.
Methods: In cross-cultural studies, the Cretan (Greece) and Zutphen (The Netherlands) cohorts of Seven Countries Study were compared with respect to long-term mortality of coronary heart disease (CHD), diet, and indicators of oxidative stress. In prospective cohort studies, data were used from the Zutphen Elderly Study (~500 men aged 65-84 y), the ‘Survey in Europe on Nutrition and the Elderly: a Concerted Action’ (SENECA, 1168 men and women aged 70-75 y), and the Minnesota Heart Survey (270 men and women aged 26-85 y).
Results: The comparison between the Cretan and Zutphen cohorts revealed a 3-fold lower 40-year CHD mortality rate in Crete. This lower mortality in Crete was paralleled by a higher consumption of fruit, tomatoes, and olive oil, amongst others, and by a lower consumption of meat, poultry, and dairy. Consequently, the Cretan men had higher intakes of carotenoids, alpha-tocopherol, vitamin C, and dietary fiber, and lower intakes of trans and saturated fatty acids. This was confirmed at the age of ≥80 years, when the Cretan men had higher plasma concentrations of major dietary antioxidants (major carotenoids and alpha-tocopherol), a lower iron status, and a lower level of oxidative stress. In the Zutphen Elderly Study, the relative risk (RR) of 15-y CVD mortality for 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in dietary intake was 0.81 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.66-0.99] for alpha-carotene and 0.80 (95% CI: 0.66-0.97) for beta-carotene. The intake of tocopherols was not related to CVD death. In SENECA, plasma concentrations of carotene (sum of alpha- and beta-carotene) were inversely related to CVD mortality (RR for 1 SD increase: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.70-1.00), but plasma concentrations of alpha-tocopherol were not. The daily use of 4 grams of cocoa, a rich source of flavanols, was related to a 3.7 mm Hg lower systolic (95% CI: –7.1 to –0.3) and a 2.1 mm Hg lower (95% CI: –4.0 to –0.2) diastolic blood pressure. The same amount of cocoa was also related to a 50% lower risk of 15-year CVD mortality (RR: 0.50; 95% CI: 0.32-0.78). Finally, in the Minnesota Heart Survey, the odds ratio of CVD mortality for the highest vs. the lowest quartile of glutathione peroxidase-3 activity was 0.42 (95% CI: 0.21-0.86). This inverse relation was confined to those with low concentrations of HDL cholesterol (odds ratio highest vs. lowest quartile: 0.17; 95% CI: 0.06-0.47).
Conclusion: The Cretan Mediterranean diet is rich in antioxidants, which may partly contribute to the low observed CHD mortality. The findings on beta-carotene support previous observational studies suggesting that this carotenoid relates to a lower CVD risk. We showed that alpha-carotene is correlated with beta-carotene in the diet, and alpha-carotene was also related to a lower CVD mortality. The results on alpha-tocopherol are in line with the outcomes of clinical trials and do not indicate a role for this vitamin in lowering CVD mortality in elderly populations.

A challenge experiment was carried out which comprised six treatment groups each consisting of 12 individually housed piglets. Each group received one of the following pelleted diets: 1) Basal Diet (BD; Negative control); 2) BD + Yeast product (Positive control, 2.5 g/kg diet); 3) BD + Product SW 7 (25 g/kg diet); 4) BD + Product SW11 (25 g/kg diet) 5) BD + Sesame seed expeller (25 g/kg diet); 6) BD + Thyme/Carvacrol (Origanum spp.; 1.0 g/kg diet). The choice of the products used in the first five treatment groups was based on the results of an in vitro study by Becker et al. (2006), and comprised a range of the in vitro adhesion capacity to E. coli K88+ from high to low. The Thyme/Carvacrol treatment was carried out on request of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. This challenge experiment showed that there was a substantial difference in effect of several plant products in the diet on response of E. coli infected pigs

Tijdens het onderzoek is veel ervaring opgedaan met en zijn veel (software) applicaties ontwikkeld die dit type onderzoek in de toekomst zullen versnellen. Met de ontwikkelde multiplex methode is het gat tussen microarray analysis en enkele genen detectie met Real Time PCR aangevuld met een relatief goedkope methode die een middelgrote set aan indicator genen kan kwantificeren. De huidige resultaten lijken de correlatie tussen gen expressie en onderzochte kwaliteitkenmerken te bevestigen. Bij roos zijn 2 genen als zeer belangrijke indicatoren geïdentificeerd en bij tomaat is op basis van microarray analysis een correlatie aangetoond tussen genexpressie en stevigheid.

This project is being financed by Wageningen University and Research Centre, from Strategic Expertise Development funds. This project distinguishes categories of people in order to crystallise the visions. This report comprises a description of the vegetable-based organic chain. This chain is described from the consumer stage right through to the suppliers. The description concludes with a SWOT analysis for the four categories of people and a quantification of the technical parameters for those categories.
