The aim of this study was to advice on the update of the odour emission factor for broiler houses that is used in the national regulation to control nuisance from odour from livestock (Rgv) in the Netherlands. The update was based a statistical analysis of odour emission data from field studies carried on 28 broiler barns between 1996 en 2014. The main conclusion drawn from this analysis was that the odour emission under current management conditions is higher than the so far used odour emission factor in the Rgv-regulation. The current odour emission factor in the Rgv assigned to broiler houses without additional air cleaning techniques amounts 0.24 OUE/s per placed bird. It is advised to adjust this factor to 0.33 OUE/s per placed bird.

In this study the emission reduction of ammonia (NH3), odour, fine dust (PM10, PM2.5), and greenhouse gases (CO2, N2O, CH4) was determined for a biofilter (440 m2) treating exhaust air from a pig house (total ventilation capacity: 290.000 m3.uur-1). The average removal for ammonia, odour and fine dust (PM10) was 38%, 43%, and > 93%, respectively. For CO2, N2O, and CH4, no significant difference between inlet and outlet concentration was found for the biofilter.

De eisen die worden gesteld aan de biologische houderij van pluimvee hebben mogelijk een effect op de emissies van ammoniak (NH3), geur, fijnstof (PM10), methaan (CH4) en lachgas (N2O). Op basis van beschikbare kennis is een inschatting gemaakt van dit effect. Daarna is aangegeven of emissie reducerende systemen zoals toegepast in de reguliere houderij, een vergelijkbaar effect hebben in de biologische houderij. Bij de systemen is ook aangegeven of ze, eventueel met een kleine aanpassing in de beschrijving, toegepast kunnen worden bij biologisch gehouden pluimvee.

The performance of an experimental biotrickling filter with denitrification unit was investigated during 18 months on a fattening pig house. In this report the removal efficiencies of the scrubber are reported for ammonia, odour and fine dust (PM10 and PM2.5). Also measurements of N2O, CH4 and CO2 are reported. Finally a nitrogen balance of the system is performed.

Organic farming places greater demands on animal welfare, for example by requiring the use of straw and more space available to the animals in the animal house as well as outdoors. There is still little known on the environmental impacts of the organic livestock production. The aim of this research was to make an inventory of the processes and factors that might play a role in the emissions of ammonia, methane, nitrous oxide, smell and fine dust from the organic-production livestock.
