Eind 2004 is door het Hoofdproductschap Akkerbouw (HPA), het Productschap Tuinbouw (PT) en LTO Nederland het initiatief genomen om de aaltjesproblemen gezamenlijk aan te pakken. Hiervoor is het actieplan aaltjesbeheersing gelanceerd. Eén van de projecten binnen dit actieplan was het monitoren van de nulsituatie. Dit project is uitgevoerd door een consortium van Blgg BV, NAK AGRO BV, en PPO-AGV. Binnen het project zijn tussen 2005 en 2006 425 akkerbouwbedrijven grondmonsters genomen. Deze zijn geanalyseerd op de meest bekende plantenparasitaire aaltjes. Daarnaast is aan de deelnemers gevraagd mee te werken aan een enquête over hun bedrijfsvoering en hun ervaringen met aaltjes

De resultaten van de experimenten van dit promotieonderzoek samen met de beschikbare gegevens van het EcoTrain-project over nematodenonderdrukking in buitenduinen laat zien dat de regulatie van nematoden veel complexer is dan tevoren werd verondersteld. Het regulatiemechanisme hangt niet alleen af van het voedseltype, maar ook van de soort nematode. De conclusie is dat vaak meer dan één factorbetrokken is bij de succesvolle onderdrukking van nematoden. Hoewel nematodenpopulaties succesvol onderdrukt kunnen worden in natuurlijke ecosystemen, is nematode-onderdrukking in de landbouw niet altijd succesvol. De resultaten van het EcoTrain-project doen sterk vermoeden dat een scala aan controlemechanismen nodig zou kunnen zijn voor nematode-onderdrukking in de landbouw en in andere productiesystemen

Plant-ectoparasitaire nematoden zijn belangrijke bodembewonende planteneters. Het doel van dit proefschrift was de interacties tussen de ectoparasiet Tylenchorhynchus ventralis, de gastheerplant Ammophila arenaria (helmgras) en de natuurlijke vijanden van de nematode op te helderen. Deze studie was bedoeld om een meer compleet overzicht te krijgen van nematodeonderdrukkingmechanismen in buitenduinen.

<p>The host/parasite system <em>Lolium perenne</em> L./ <em>Tylenchorhynchus dubius</em> (Bütschli, 1873) Filipjev, 1936 was studied in experiments and by simulation, to elucidate the nature and functioning of the relationship between pasture and ectoparasitic nematodes.<p>The influence of temperature and soil moisture on the system and the incidence of tolerance and resistance in the host were studied in experiments under controlled conditions.<p><em>A</em> mathematical simulation model was developed for the host/parasite system; preliminary models for the population dynamics of the nematode and the influence of the nematode on plant growth are presented.<p>Measurements and simulations indicate that the ratio of nematode numbers to young roots is a main determinant of the effect of the nematodes on plant growth. The role of <em>T.</em><em>dubius</em> and other ectoparasitic nematodes in the failure of reseeded pastures is discussed.

By means of investigations in the laboratory, in greenhouses and in the field the author collected data on the biology, population dynamics and economic importance of Tylenchorhynchus dubius, the most common of the nematode species that live ectoparasitically on the roots of higher plants in sandy soils in the Netherlands and neighbouring countries.

After reviewing the literature and the methods used the author devoted some chapters to multiplication, development and growth, ecology, the field population and the damage to plants.

The study of the life cycle comprised observations and experiments on copulation, egg-stage, first larval moult in the egg, the emergence of the L 2 , the development and morphology of the larval and adult stages and the morphological variation of the latter. The life cycle could be followed fairly completely; it was found to take 40-48 days. The data are fixed in Tables 1-3, photographs and drawings (Figs. 1, 2, 5-12), and in a documentary film.

As to ecology and behaviour, the following aspects were studied: movement, feeding, host plants, survival with and without host plants, influence of the physical environment and of the biotic environment in the soil.

The observations and experiments are represented in Table 4-27 and Fig. 13-41. They give a picture of the biology of the nematode in relation to its environment, which is now more fully documented than that of the other ectoparasitic nematode species so far.

The field research was done chiefly on a population in the garden of the Plant Protection Service, and supplemented by pot experiments. During five years the author studied effects on host plants, density and distribution in the soil, and seasonal population fluctuations in relation with physical and biotic factors. The results are summarized in Tables 28-31 and Figs. 42-52.

Inoculation experiments and observations on damage showed, that, apart from discoloration of cortical cells, Tylenchorhynchus dubius does not produce conspicuous symptoms of the roots. The infestation results in growth decrease, e.g. in English rye-grass, wheat and turnip, but also in cotton, millet and other tropical crops. In combination with Phoma medicaginis, T. dubius induces black stem foot disease in peas which is not produced by either of these organisms separately (Table 32-35, Fig. 53-56). The fact, that this nematode is widely found in densities judged harmful, indicates that it is economically important and that attention should be given to its control.

Oostenbrink presents evidence showing the role of the migratory root eelworms, mostly species of Pratylenchus, Paratylenchus and Hoplolaimus, in causing damage to agricultural and horticultural crops in Holland. In Holland there appear to be seven species of Pratylenchus, viz., P. pratensis, P. penetrara, P. thornei, a species close to P. scribneri and three species close to P. minyus. Tylenchorhynchus spp. and Rotylenchus erythrinae were also found. The damage done by these eelworms is often considerable.
