Future Food Basket : methodology for the forecasting of the future food demand

Research by Wageningen University & Research (WUR) on global food and nutrition security focuses on the question how to achieve transitions to a food system that will be adequately equipped to nourish the growing world population. One of the challenges of this transition is to evolve to a food system that will be sustainable (resource-efficient and with minimal impact on climate change and global warming), yielding affordable, trustworthy (safe), high-quality food products. This particular report is part of a study on the redesign of food value chains from linear value chains into circular adaptive value chain networks for nutrition and food security (Redesign or Adaptive Value Chain Networks for food and nutrition security (AdVaNs)). In view of the global trends of world population growth, urbanization, the efficient use of natural resources, mitigation of the impact of food production on climate change and global warming, this research addresses global food and nutrition security by developing a forecast model for the content and composition of local food baskets. Enablers of changes in these future food baskets are the growing economic welfare, advancing information technologies and sustainability issues that affect regional and global value chains. Knowledge about these trends in this future demand on food is searched for by policy makers and governments that are in need of accurate and reliable quantitative information for strategic decision-making. By developing forecasting models that are dedicated to human nutritional needs and consumption patterns, historic quantitative data can be transferred into future trends and predictions regarding food demand in specific regions. A methodology, using autonomous time based linear regression, was developed by the authors to predict a future food basket in terms of energy, composition and products for the near future in 2030 based on available historical data. The methodology was used for 4 regions in Mexico (Mexico City, North-, South- and Central Mexico). Also the amount of micro-nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, in the food was estimated. The forecasted results were also categorised by two demographic characteristics: income class (low income vs. high income) and the residential environment (urban vs. rural environment). The forecasting is based on FAO data in combination with national data for the prediction of the specific regional food baskets in Mexico. The results show that the urban region obtains more energy and vegetables, fruit and meat, having also the more wealthy class of the population. Also in Mexico most proteins and carbohydrates are consumed as part of staple foods. In this research validation of the methodology was carried out by using data from the past to predict the situation in 2011 of the composition of the food basket. This comparison of the present data with the forecasted data shows that this linear regression method can be used to forecast the food basket in 2030 for a majority of product groups, but to a smaller extent for milk and pulses in particular

Selection for indirect genetic effects (IGE), i.e. the genetic effect of an individual on a trait of another individual, is a promising avenue to increase trait values in plant and animal breeding. Studies in livestock suggest that selection for IGE for growth (IGEg) might increase animals’ capacity to tolerate stress. We assessed the effect of a stressful phase (weaning) on the behaviour and performance of pigs (n = 480) divergently selected for high or low IGEg. High IGEg pigs were significantly slower to explore the feed and gained less weight than low IGEg pigs in the days after weaning. In line with previous findings, high IGEg animals may have prioritized the formation of social ranks.

The roles of identity and brand equity in organic consumption behavior : Private label brands versus national brands

Organic brands have become increasingly important as an offering by which retailers can differentiate themselves. The current study examines the role of two key drivers (i.e., brand equity and social identification) in the consumption of organic private label brands (PLBs) and the extent to which this role differs compared to organic national brands (NBs). Using a longitudinal panel study among consumers in Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and the US, we tested both mediating and moderating effects of brand equity, brand identification, and organic consumer identification on organic brand consumption and on organic consumption behavior in general. The results show that for both PLBs and NBs, brand equity positively influences organic brand consumption and organic consumption behavior. For PLBs, brand identification is related to organic brand consumption as well as organic consumption behavior. In contrast, for NBs, organic consumer identification influences organic brand consumption and organic consumption behavior, which suggests a difference in identity salience for both types of brands. In addition, we found that the relationship between brand equity and organic brand consumption is partially mediated by brand identification, which implies that consumers are more likely to identify with brands that have higher brand equity. Marketing implications are discussed.

Consumer demand for organic food and non-food products has been growing dramatically. This study examines organic consumption behavior from a social identification perspective. Focusing on the central role of organic consumer identification (OCI), or the extent to which individuals categorize themselves as organic consumers, this study theorizes and empirically establishes environmental consumer identification, organic product-related cognitions (i.e., organic product familiarity and trustworthiness), and their interactions as key antecedents of OCI. As importantly, we show that the positive effect of OCI on consumer loyalty to organic products is contingent upon both prevailing social norms of organic consumption and the perceived price of organic products. In establishing these relationships, this study paints a more nuanced, comprehensive and generalizable picture of what drives consumer social identification and what are its consequences in the domain of organic consumption. It offers several important implications for theory and practice.

Genetically encoded tyrosine (Y-tag) can be utilized as a latent anchor for inducible and site-selective conjugation. Upon oxidation of tyrosine with mushroom tyrosinase, strain-promoted cycloaddition (SPOCQ) of the resulting 1,2-quinone with various bicyclo[6.1.0]nonyne (BCN) derivatives led to efficient conjugation. The method was applied for fluorophore labeling of laminarinase A and for the site-specific preparation of an antibody-drug conjugate.

Chemical protein biotinylation and streptavidin or anti-biotin-based capture is regularly used for proteins as a more controlled alternative to direct coupling of the protein on a biosensor surface. On biotinylation an interaction site of interest may be blocked by the biotin groups, diminishing apparent activity of the protein. Minimal biotinylation can circumvent the loss of apparent activity, but still a binding site of interest can be blocked when labeling an amino acid involved in the binding. Here, we describe reaction condition optimization studies for minimal labeling. We have chosen low affinity Fcγ receptors as model compounds as these proteins contain many lysines in their active binding site and as such provide an interesting system for a minimal labeling approach. We were able to identify the most critical parameters (protein:biotin ratio and incubation pH) for a minimal labeling approach in which the proteins of choice remain most active toward analyte binding. Localization of biotinylation by mass spectrometric peptide mapping on minimally labeled material was correlated to protein activity in binding assays. We show that only aiming at minimal labeling is not sufficient to maintain an active protein. Careful fine-tuning of critical parameters is important to reduce biotinylation in a protein binding site.

Maternal obesity and perinatal high-fat diets are known to affect cognitive development. We examined the effects of late prenatal and/or early postnatal exposure to a Western-type diet, high in both fat and refined sugar, on the cognition of pigs (Sus scrofa) in the absence of obesity. Thirty-six sows and their offspring were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 3 2 factorial arrangement, with 8 wk prenatal and 8 wk postnatal exposure to a Western diet (enriched in fat, sucrose, and cholesterol) or control diets as factors. Compared to controls, piglets exposed to the prenatal Western diet showed enhanced working and reference memory during the acquisition and reversal phases of a spatial hole-board task. Mothers fed the prenatal Western diet had higher prepartum blood cholesterol and free fatty acid levels. Postnatal exposure to the Western diet did not affect piglet cognitive performance, but it did increase postpartum maternal and postweaning piglet cholesterol levels. The Western diet had no effect on maternal or offspring insulin sensitivity or leptin levels. In conclusion, a prenatal Western diet improved memory function in pigs, which was paired with changes in prepartum maternal blood cholesterol levels. Although consumers' awareness of the environmental and ethical consequences of their behaviour has grown, research on the role of multiple consumer identities in sustainability behaviours is scarce. The aim of the current study was to explain sustainable behaviour from a social identity perspective. We conducted a longitudinal cross-national within-subjects design consumer study in six countries (T1, N=3083; T2, N=1440). The results indicate that environmental sustainability can comprise several distinct yet overlapping sustainable behaviours. Multiple social identities seem to play different roles in these different behaviours. Therefore, efforts to enhance different sustainability behaviours are challenging yet promising. Once consumers incorporate a sustainable behaviour, it becomes part of their own identity and could lead to spill over effects on other closely related sustainable behaviours.

Marketing Novel Fruit Products : Evidence for Diverging Marketing Effects Across Different Products and Different Countries

The purpose of this study was to compare the influence of four different marketing claims and price information on consumers’ product choices for novel fruits and novel fruit products, using a choice experiment. In total, 1,652 people in Greece (n = 400), the Netherlands (n = 419), Poland (n = 423), and Spain (n = 410) participated in the study. The marketing claims entailed (1) information about scientific findings concerning health benefits, (2) social norm information, (3) information about the products’ naturalness, and (4) information about the products’ time-until-expiration. The results showed that all four marketing claims and price information influenced consumer choice, but the effect of naturalness depended on the specific novel fruit product being advertised, and the effect of time-until-expiration depended on both country and fruit product. These results suggest that marketing communications should be tailored to different national markets and to specific fruit products.

Perceived sustainability initiatives: retail managers’ intrinsic and extrinsic motives

Purpose
– Although awareness of environmental sustainability has increased over the past few decades, the current market share of sustainable products remains low. Because of their market position, large-scale and high-volume consumer interactions, food retailers are appropriate venues to entice consumers to buy more sustainable foods. The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which food retailers are perceived to have embedded sustainability initiatives in their marketing strategies and to have taken sustainable tactical measures on the store floor. In addition, the study considered the roles played by social identification (SI) and by perceived external prestige (PEP).
Design/methodology/approach
– Based on a literature review and semi-structured qualitative interviews with the chief executive officers (CEOs) of Dutch food retailers, the authors conducted an online panel survey among the managers of these food retailers.
Findings
– The results of the study show the positive impacts of managers’ SI with a sustainable consumer group and managers’ PEP on the perceived environmental sustainability initiatives of Dutch food retailers. The study finds that managers’ SIs are powerful ways to engender employee loyalty. Moreover, organisations that are perceived to have more external prestige are perceived as being more capable of developing sustainability policies.
Originality/value
– The current study combines views from CEOs of large Dutch food retailers with supermarket manager’s perceptions of sustainability initiatives on a strategical and tactical level of an organisation. It uses insights from CSR, food retail and SI theory literature to explain these perceptions.

In an earlier study it was concluded, based on literature and interviews, that biotrickling filters might be responsible for airborne transmission of Legionella bacteria. Risk factors in this type of systems are recirculating of trickling water with a pH close to neutral and the use of spray nozzles and fans. Under the right conditions, temperatures supportive for Legionella growth might be found in the scrubbing water. In order to investigate this risk, measurements were done at 36 animal houses where biotrickling filters were operated for exhaust air treatment. The investigation was performed in August and September because in several years the number of reports of Legionnaires’ disease significantly increased during this period in the Netherlands; during summer warming up of the water by ambient temperature is likely. In none of the samples Legionella was found. In only a few biotrickling filters the measured temperature was at such a level that growth of Legionella would be possible. It is concluded that it is unlikely that biotrickling filters at animal houses are a source of Legionella transmission to the air.
A decrease in movement at a defined moment in life predicts death
