Sustainability by Default : Co-creating Care and Relationality Through Early Childhood Education
Wals, Arjen E.J. - \ 2017
International Journal of Early Childhood 49 (2017)2. - ISSN 0020-7187 - p. 155 - 164.
Childhood - Connectivism - Early childhood education - Ethic of care - Learning ecology - Sustainability

In this article, based on a keynote address presented at the 68th OMEP World Assembly and International Conference held in Seoul in July 2016, it is argued that children are more in tune with sustainability than most adults and that both adults and children can benefit from intergenerational dialogue and expanded learning opportunities in so-called ecologies of learning. The idea of growing up in the Anthropocene, the new geological epoch that is shaped by one single species, home sapiens, is introduced. What does growing up in the Anthropocene mean for today’s children? A short critique is provided of the neoliberal forces that increasingly influence what happens in education and care settings and that essentially make unsustainability the default in our society. Drawing on Martin Buber’s ideas of relational ways of being in the world; Nell Nodding’s notions of care; and George Siemen’s ideas about learning ecologies, some suggestions are offered for co-creating early childhood education and care with people and the planet in mind.

The molecular basis of natural variation in cold stress response in Caenorhabditis elegans
Stastna, J. ; Snoek, L.B. ; Nei, Nell ; Wang, Yiru ; Riksen, J.A.G. ; Kammenga, J.E. ; Harvey, S.C. - \ 2017
Temperature regulation is generally a critical requirement for survival and proliferation, with the ability to survive both chronic and acute cold stress often being essential for wild-type fitness. Understanding how eukaryotic cells respond to low temperatures is also crucially important in aspects of biotechnology and medicine. In general, effects of low temperature depend on the severity of the stress and has been implicated the genes and pathways that regulate membrane lipid composition in cold stress survival. In comparison to what is known about the response to high temperature stress, low temperature stress is less well understood.

Here we present an analysis of natural variation in cold stress resistance in the nematode C. elegans. Several approaches were taken to study this, these included testing in novel 4-parent recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and wild isolates. The results uncovered extensive variation in response to cold shock treatment and, for the first time, linked cold stress survival to the regulation of translation in C. elegans. Critically, genes previously identified in cold response cannot explain the variation detected. We have identified variation in eftu-2 (a homologue of human eEF-2), a gene important for the elongation step in protein synthesis, as the main genetic variant explaining the response to cold stress.

Emergency measures or development? : Avian Influenza eradication projects in Indonesia
Giani, A. ; Nell, A.J. ; Lee, J. van der - \ 2012
Rural 21 : the international journal for rural development 46 (2012)2. - ISSN 1866-8011 - p. 40 - 43.
Funds were rapidly made available internationally to check the spread of Avian Influenza following the outbreak of the disease. But how effective and efficient have programmes initiated been in the longer term? The authors look at an Indonesian- Dutch programme and consider the potential of factors such as capacity building and the widening of the programme’s remit.
