A Question of Segregation : 'GM-free' Maize Bread in Portugal

We describe the maize supply chain in Portugal for maize bread, a traditional bread type. As this bread is not labelled as 'contains genetically modified organisms' it should not contain more than 0.9 per cent genetically modified ingredients. On the basis of interviews we identify a general lack of documentation of the presence or absence of genetically modified ingredients along the complete supply chain (farmers, traders, mills and bakeries). Part of this deficiency is probably driven by a lack of awareness of the labelling rules at the end of the supply chain. A test of maize bread showed that more than 40 per cent of breads were indeed over the labelling threshold, and should be labelled. This includes GM maize that is not cultivated in the EU and enters the supply chain via international trade. We conclude that the realisation of coexistence and segregation requires involvement of the full supply chain, rather than just segregation at the start, if bread is to be sold with a GMO content below the 0.9 per cent threshold level. Alternatively, retailers can label their bread. This might be a cheaper solution and as a study from Switzerland shows may not result in adverse consumer reaction.

Coffee is – next to petroleum – one of the most valuable agricultural commodities traded at international markets (Arslan and Reicher, 2010; Rodriquez, 2012). Today, coffee remains one of the most important sources of export income for East African nations (i.e. Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania). Ethiopia is known to be the birthplace and the primary centre of biodiversity of Arabica coffee (Daviron and Ponte, 2005; Labouisse et al., 2008). The main production systems in Ethiopia are forest coffee in the traditional way, semi-forest coffee, garden coffee, and plantation coffee owned by the state (Labouisse et al., 2008; Stellmacher and Grote, 2011). Considering the country’s suitable altitude, rainfall, temperature, and fertile soil, the potential for coffee production in Ethiopia is very high.
Assembling sustainable territories : space, subjects, objects, and expertise in seafood certification

The authors show how certification assembles ‘sustainable’ territories through a complex layering of regulatory authority in which both government and nongovernment entities claim rule-making authority, sometimes working together, sometimes in parallel, sometimes competitively. It is argued that territorialisation is accomplished not just through (re)defining bounded space, but more broadly through the assembling of four elements: space, subjects, objects, and expertise. Four case studies of sustainability certification in seafood are analyzed to show that ‘green gabbing’ is not necessarily the central dynamic in assembling sustainable territories, and that certification always involves state agencies in determining how the key elements that comprise it are defined. Whereas some state agencies have been suspicious of sustainability certification, others have embraced it or even used it to extend their sovereignty.The authors call for more nuanced understandings of sustainability certification as made up of multiple logics beyond the market.

Aquaculture, the farming of aquatic organisms, provides close to 50% of the world's supply of seafood, with a value of U.S. $125 billion. It makes up 13% of the world's animal-source protein (excluding eggs and dairy) and employs an estimated 24 million people (1). With capture (i.e., wild) fisheries production stagnating, aquaculture may help close the forecast global deficit in fish protein by 2020 (2). This so-called “blue revolution” requires addressing a range of environmental and social problems, including water pollution, degradation of ecosystems, and violation of labor standards.

Sooty blotch and flyspeck (SBFS) fungi colonize the surface wax layer of the fruit of apple, pear, persimmon, banana, orange, papaya, and several other cultivated tree and vine crops. In addition to colonizing cultivated fruit crops, SBFS fungi also grow on the surfaces of stems, twigs, leaves, and fruit of a wide range of wild plants. The disease occurs worldwide in regions with moist growing seasons. SBFS is regarded as a serious disease by fruit growers and plant pathologists because it can cause substantial economic damage. The smudges and stipples of SBFS often result in downgrading of fruit from premium fresh-market grade to processing use. This review describes the major shifts that have occurred during the past decade in understanding the genetic diversity of the SBFS complex, clarifying its biogeography and environmental biology, and developing improved management strategies.

The present study examines the effects of additions of hydrocolloids and pretreatments (precooking and irradiation) on the stability of minced fillets of whiting and cod during frozen storage (-18°C).<p>Some hydrocolloids (Xanthan gum, alginates, carboxymethyl celluloses and Iota and Lambda carrageenan) increase the water holding capacity and have a cryoprotective effect on the texture of the fish minces during frozen storage.<p>Irradiation (300 krad, -20°C) can be applied to the fish minces for decreasing the number of viable microorganisms, without affecting the keeping quality of the fish minces in the post-irradiation frozen storage. Precooking the fish minces up to an internal temperature of 80°C or higher, for short periods of time (about 1 minute), prevents the production of dimethyIamine and formaldehyde in the fish minces during subsequent frozen storage. Both precooking and irradiation can be used in combination with additions of hydrocolloids in the fish minces with beneficial effects.<p>Hydrocolloids can be used as additives in the manufacture of minced fish products, decreasing the weight loss on cooking, stabilizing the texture and in certain cases increasing significantly the acceptability of the fish products during frozen storage. Iota carrageenan and under certain conditions carboxymethyl cellulose decrease the fat uptake of battered and breaded minced fish products during frying.
