Book covers introduced in Wageningen Yield (WaY)

March 24, 2006

In our repository Wageningen Yield (Way), it is now possible to see images of book covers when they have been published recently and covers are available. There are not that many books in Way, but a few examples are the following records

We are planning to introduce this feature in our catalogue in due course, please let us know whether you find this useful at servicedesk.library@wur.nl

Open Access Publication Fund formed

March 24, 2006

Under the Open Access publication model journals are freely available via the internet; no subscription is needed. The publishing costs are covered by an Article Processing Fee (APF), which is paid by the authors (or their employers).

Wageningen UR Library has a membership relation with two Open Access publishers: Biomed Central (BMC) and Public Library of Science (PLoS). Until now the membership fee for Biomed Central covered the Article Processing Fees for Wageningen UR authors.
BMC changed their Open Access business model, which makes publishing much more expensive. A membership now yields - like PLoS - a deduction of only 15% per article (average APF is € 1000,- per publication). Apart from this supporter membership one can choose for a pre- or postpay model. Prepayment offers a small discount on the APF.

Because Wageningen UR is positive about the Open Access initiative and the Wageninge UR authors have the intention to publish more in Open Access journals, it is decided to create a publication fund. In 2006 this fund will contain € 7000,- for covering the Article Processing Fees under the postpayment model. Only the costs of articles directly charged by BMC or PLoS to Wageningen UR Library will be paid from this Open Access Fund.

In 2006 Wageningen UR library will discuss the future policy concerning Open Access Publishing with all parties involved.

New databases

March 2, 2006

Library Wageningen UR offers two new databases available through the Ebsco host : Communication & Mass Media Index and Gender Studies Database.

Communication & Mass Media Index is a combination of two formerly produced databases, CommSearch and Mass Media Articles Index. Other journals in communication, mass media, and other closely-related fields of study are added to create a research and reference resource of a broad scope and depth of the communication discipline. Included are all important journals from the field, such as Communication Research, Communication Studies, Gazette and the International Journal of Advertising. Citation searching and Author Profiles (address information combined subjects and journals) are special features of this database.

The Gender Studies Database covers the full spectrum of gender-engaged scholarship. The scope is interdisciplinary and includes women's studies, men's studies, ethnic and health issues. The database indexes scholarly and popular publications, including journals, newsletters, books, book chapters, websites etc. This database includes almost 700.000 records with coverage spanning from 1972 and earlier to present. Search options in this database are limited: only index and keyword searching are available.

Improved linking to Wageningen UR library resources in Google Scholar

February 23, 2006

Google Scholar is a specialized search engine for scholarly content. Google Scholar is still in beta testing and far from perfect, but it has the potential of becoming an important source for discovering scholarly information. Google Scholar works closely with the library community to improve their search engine. To improve easy access to scientific literature for its institutional users, Wageningen UR Library has now made the holding data of its electronic journal collection available to Google. As a result, having found a reference to a journal article in Google Scholar that is also part of the Electronic Journals collection of Wageningen UR, you will see a link “Get it from WUR Library” underneath the resource description. Clicking on the link will open the Wageningen UR Library SFX menu for this article.

Linking is far from perfect, but whenever this link appears, there is a good chance you can get the full text on your screen in just a few mouse clicks .
The linking from Google Scholar to SFX, works also from outside WURnet. For this, you should first log in to My Library and then start Google Scholar from the Digital Library, e.g from a Portal Page or from the catalog record for Google Scholar.

New features in Web of Science

February 15, 2006

As of January 2006 new features have been added to ISI Web of Knowledge and Web of Science. You can now:

ABI/INFORM Global

February 07, 2006

ABI/INFORM Global is one of the most comprehensive business databases on the market. It includes in-depth coverage for over 2,700 publications, with more than 2,000 available in full text. The database covers scholarly journals, but also newsletters, newspapers and other sources. Topics include business conditions, management techniques, business trends, management practice and theory and corporate strategy. The subject indexing makes it a key tool for business-related topics such as human resources, accounting, finance, operations and marketing issues

Included in ABI/INFORM Global is ABI/INFORM Archive™. This retrospective companion to ABI/INFORM provides cover-to-cover, full-images complete with illustrations and advertisements. Titles include:

ABI/INFORM Global also offers access to additional databases, such as: Hoover's Company Records (corporate data, information on a company's location, summary financials, top competitors, and more) and ProQuest Asian Business and Reference (Covers Asian business and financial information from key international publications including Far Eastern Economic Review, Asiaweek, and many more. Coverage: 1971-present)

The directory of Open Access Journals Passed the 2000 journals mark

January 18, 2006

The number of journals collected by the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) has surpassed the 2000 journals limit. Journals frequently used by patrons of Library Wageningen UR include Bioscience, biotechnology, and biochemistry, Current Science and BMJ british medical journal.

It is important to note that more evidence has become available on the larger impact of articles published in Open Access (OA) journals compared to traditional journals (Hajjem et al., 2005).

Five more open access journals tracked by ISI

December 20, 2005

Open Access journals are growing in number and gaining in popularity. An important step in the acceptance of these journals in the scientific community is the fact that those journals are covered in databases such as Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports (JCR, the database that produces the journal Impact Factors each year). Recently it was announced that five more BioMed Central journals were accepted for inclusion in Web of Science and JCR will calculate the Impact Factors for these journals in 2008. Among the new candidates are BMC Developmental Biology, BMC Plant Biology and BMC Structural Biology. A comprehensive list of the 30 open access journals published by BioMed Central which are tracked by Web of Science and JCR is listed here.

Springer and Kluwer Archives electronically available

December 7, 2005

Springer has announced that all of their journal archives are now electronically available. The collection covers some 1400 journals, e.g. Euphytica, Plant & Soil, Theoretical and Applied Genetics, and Planta amongst others.
Totalling an 1.8 million additional full text articles. Currently our catalog records haven’t been updated yet, but linking to the journals with SFX works seamlessly.

Course Libraries in EDUweb

November 28, 2005

Wageningen UR Library facilitates the creation and maintenance of so-called Course Libraries. For this purpose, a special web part was added to the Home Page which EDUweb provides for each Wageningen University course.

In the Virtual Learning Environment of Wageningen University, a Course Library is a digital library environment tailored towards a specific Wageningen University course. A Course Library consists of links to bibliographies, databases, web sites, and electronic and hard copy books, journals and journal articles relevant to the course to which it is linked.

Lecturers can compile Course Libraries from all sources available through the Wageningen Digital Library. They can then provide a link to a read-only version of the Course Library for use by students.

The links that are included in a Course library will be constantly maintained and updated by Wageningen UR Library. Sources which are no longer available (e.g. web sites that cease to exist) will automatically be removed from the Course Library.

More information on how to create and maintain a course library.

If you have any further questions or if you need help in compiling a Course Library, please contact one of the information specialists of Wageningen UR Library.

Important message concerning Web of Science

May 25, 2005

'View Full Text' button in Web of Science might be confusing.

When you have performed a search in ISI Web of Science and you want to access the full text of the article, use the 'SFX button' which is implemented by Library Wageningen UR. This button always leads to the correct information about availability within Wageningen UR.
Due to licensing restrictions, full text of an article may not be available when the 'View Full Text' button, added by ISI, is used as you can see in the following example:

The 'SFX' button leads to our catalogue and provides access to the full text of the article. The 'View Full Text' button is a link to APA journals, which is not a subscription database for Wageningen UR

Keesings Historisch Archief

(Dutch language)

May 24, 2005

Major changes to CAB Abstracts

November 26, 2004

CAB Abstracts, our most intensively used bibliographic database, has been updated recently. New fields are added, such as authors e-mail address, and DOI (a number that provides a stable link to an electronic item). What is more important is that the indexing for authors has changed as well. A search for 'Giller in AU' gives many results now, whereas previously one had to include the initials or a wildcard. From now on new additions to the CAB database will become available monthly rather than 4 times per year which it used to be. This is an important improvement for My Library users who have alerts on new search results in CAB abstracts, the so called SDI service.

Wageningen UR member of PLOS (Public Library of Science)

August 26th, 2004

Wageningen UR Library signed a contract with PLoS for an institutional membership. As one of the results of this, Wageningen UR authors get - with the current level of membership - a discount of 20% on the publishing charges of PLoS Journals (PLoS-Biology and PLoS-Medicine).

The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a public resource (the Open Access Model). One of the PLoS projects is PLoS Journals. PLoS states that: "PLoS has launched a nonprofit scientific publishing venture that will provide scientists with high-quality, high-profile journals in which to publish their most important work, while making the full contents freely available for anyone to read, distribute, or use for their own research. The PLoS journals are run by professional editors, trained scientists, and physicians, in close collaboration with editorial boards. Papers published in these journals are peer reviewed using a uniquely consultative process between editors and experts in their field, and are produced to the highest editorial and production standards. Under the open access model, PLoS makes all published works immediately available online, with no charges for access and no restrictions on subsequent redistribution or use."

PLoS Biology was first published in October 2003; PLoS is now accepting submissions for PLoS Medicine and will publish the first issue in October 2004.

For more information and access to PLoS Journals, go to the PLoS website

From June 1st 2003 onwards, you can use your 'My Library' account to access electronic journals, bibliographies and other restricted-access electronic resources from computers outside the Wageningen UR network. As a result you can utilize these resources from home or while you are travelling. This off-campus access is only available while you are logged in to 'My Library' on the Wageningen Desktop Library homepage and then only if you access these resources through the links provided in the Wageningen Digital Library, not from a publisher's website. If you already have an account but forgot your password please follow the instructions on the login page to receive a reminder of your password by e-mail.

All back issues (1905-2003) of the Journal of Biological Chemistry are now available online.

In anticipation of the Centennial of the JBC in 2005, all back issues of the JBC are now available online. The entire archive of JBC, 1905-2003, is available, searchable and free!
The publisher - the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) - states to be a strong supporter of Open Access publishing. The free archive is one of the results of that policy.
Open Access - in its simplest version - means that all papers published in a journal are available free to everyone from the day they are first published. Under Open Access the costs associated with journal publishing are no longer covered by subscriptions, but are borne by the authors/granting agencies as page charges.

Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins online journals no longer available.

Since 2004 all Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins electronic journals are only available via the Ovid platform. This move caused an extreme rise in subscription fees. Because of this, Library Wageningen UR was forced to withdraw the journals from the Digital Library. They are still available in print.

It concerns the following titles:

Wageningen Tulip Portal

Wageningen UR Library has an unique collection of historical and recent literature on the tulip. Wageningen University and Research Centre produces modern scientific and practical knowledge about tulips. This site is developed by Wageningen UR Library to make both available for the general public.

Wageningen UR Library subscribes to BioOne

Since the beginning of this year all members of Wageningen UR have access to the journals of BioOne. BioOne is an aggregator of electronic journals in the field of Bioscience. The collection is rapidly expanding in number of titles and currently contains 68 journals. The Library subscribed already to nearly half the number of journals on paper which have now become electronically available.

Essential Science Indicators (ESI)

Wageningen UR Library has acquired access to the ISI-ESI database for the year 2004. The Essential Science Indicators is a tool that analyzes research performance of companies, institutions, countries, scientists and journals. It allows rankings to be made quite easily and identifies significant trends in current research.

ESI can be accessed via Web of Knowledge.

Add-to-Shortcuts functionality improved

All Dekker Online Journals added

A very interesting set of more than 90 online journals of Dekker Publishers has been added to the Wageningen Digital Library. See: Dekker Journals

Warning for the users of SDI-profiles in Webspirs databases

We are confronted with the following problem:

If you change your password of your My Library account, your SDI-profiles in WebSpirs databases will become inactive. That means: No output will be received when a database is updated. This problem is caused by the fact that in Webspirs the old password is still active. The database provider is trying to solve this problem.

Database TUiN

Database TUiN offers information in Dutch on historical and existing Dutch gardens, parks, estates, cemeteries and land art features in the Netherlands and other 'Green Monuments'. Archival collections of 25 of the most celebrated Dutch garden and landscape architects will become available in TUiN. The work of the famous garden architect L.A. Springer (1855-1940) is now searchable. Images of his designs are included.

In celebration of this event an exhibition of Springers' work is held at the Museum Casteelse Poort in Wageningen from November 14th till May 31st 2004.
Our latest acquisition, the oeuvre of garden architect Mien Ruys (1904-1999), will in due time also be made available through the database TUiN: http://library.wur.nl/tuin

PsycINFO Database

At last, after requests of several departments, a trial for PsycINFO is available until January 1st 2004. After this date the use of the database will be evaluated. Whether this trial will be changed into a real subscription will depend on usage statistics and user appreciation.

PsycINFO is the leading international bibliographic database on psychology and behavioural sciences of man and animal. It also includes information about the psychological aspects of related disciplines such as medicine, sociology, education, physiology, anthropology, business and law.
The database, produced by the American Psychological Association, covers over 1300 journals. Available from 1872 and onwards! At this moment the database contains almost 2 million records and approximately 55.000 records are added each year.

PsycINFO recently has added cited references appearing in journal articles, books, and book chapters to its records. Comprehensive coverage of cited references began in 2001, but references appear in records from 1988 on.

JSTOR Journal Archive

JSTOR is a digital archive collection of core scholarly journals. It is unique in that complete archives of these journals have been digitised, starting with the very first issues, many of which were published as far back as the nineteenth century. The JSTOR archive combines page images for display and printing with a linked text file for full-text searches of major scholarly journals. Staff and students of Wageningen UR can search , view and print JSTOR journal articles at any time and off-campus access from any location (My Library account needed).

http://www.jstor.org

Currently, there are six collections available, with a further collection to be released in Autumn 2003. Wageningen UR Library subscribes to 4 of the available collections.

Biological Abstracts Backfiles

As a result of repeated requests of Digital Library Users 20 years (1969-1988) of bibliographic data have been purchased and added to Biological Abstracts, which is available on our ERL-platform (WebSpirs, WinSpirs). The database now covers the period 1969-2003.

Biological Abstracts provides comprehensive worldwide coverage of research in the biological and biomedical sciences.

Web-of-Science: more years and improved

Web-of-Science is now available directly via an ISI-server under the umbrella of Web-of-Knowledge. You will find Journal Citation Reports and Current Contents Connect there as well.

ISI Web of Science provides access to Science Citation Expanded , Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index. Recently Wageningen UR Library was able to buy the backfiles from 1945 and onwards. At the moment Web of Science contains almost 33 million articles from more than 8,700 scientific journals.
Web of Science offers a unique search method: cited reference searching. You can navigate forward, backward and through literature by searching on citations. With this method you can find out how ideas are picked up in the scientific world and how often a researcher is cited.
Furthermore, searching options in version 6.0 of Web of Science have been considerably improved:

Not new but very convenient is the possibility to export search results to database management packages like EndNote and Reference Manager.

Powerpoint Presentation: Web of Science 6.1
