Ontpoldering Noordwaard : aanvullende startnotitie MER

Rainfall depth-duration-frequency curves and their uncertainties

Rainfall depth-duration-frequency (DDF) curves describe rainfall depth as a function of duration for given return periods and are important for the design of hydraulic structures. This paper focusses on the effects of dependence between the maximum rainfalls for different durations on the estimation of DDF curves and the modelling of uncertainty of these curves. For this purpose the hourly rainfall depths from 12 stations in the Netherlands are analysed. The records of these stations are concatenated to one station-year record, since no geographical variation in extreme rainfall statistics could be found and the spatial dependence between the maximum rainfalls appears to be small. A generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution is fitted to the 514 annual rainfall maxima from the station-year record for durations of 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 24 h. Subsequently, the estimated GEV parameters are modelled as a function of duration to construct DDF curves, using the method of generalized least squares to account for the correlation between GEV parameters for different durations. A bootstrap estimate of the covariance matrix of the estimated GEV parameters is used in the generalized least squares procedure. It turns out that the shape parameter of the GEV distribution does not vary with duration. The bootstrap is also used to obtain 95%-confidence bands of the DDF curves. The bootstrap distribution of the estimated quantiles can be described by a lognormal distribution. The parameter s of this distribution (standard deviation of the underlying normal distribution) is modelled as a function of duration and return period

Phosphorus recovery from human urine

A process to recover nutrients from human urine was tested at the Institute of Environmental Engineering (ISA) of RWTH Aachen University. Before testing the recovery process the urine was stored and the decomposition processes during this period were observed. Throughout the storage the pH value and the concentration of ammonia nitrogen increased, the concentration of phosphate phosphorus decreased. These variances can be speed up by addition of urease. The recovery process is easy to handle and approx. 99% of the load of phosphate phosphorus was eliminated and transferred into the product. Analysing the product indicators for struvite could be identified. The final step of the process is the stripping of the remaining ammonia-nitrogen by air followed by a gas washing

Concentration of nutrients from urine and reject water from anaerobically digested sludge

Experiments with concentration of nutrients from source separated urine and reject water from digestion of sludge in sewage treatment plants (STP) have been performed in laboratory and pilot scale. The methods tested were membrane filtration with reverse osmosis (RO), evaporation, and precipitation of phosphorus and distillation of ammonia. In membrane filtration, pre-filtration with particle separation at 5–10mm was enough to avoid clogging of the membranes. Separation of phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and sulphur (S) was almost 100%, while separation of nitrogen (N) was dependent on pH. The capacity of flux increased with temperature and pressure. In evaporation, all P, K and S were still in the concentrate, while pH had to be decreased to 4.5 to avoid significant loss of N. In precipitation and distillation, about 90% of P could be recovered from urine as magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) just by adding MgO. For the reject water pH was first increased by aeration to remove CO2. Ammonium can be distilled from the water phase after precipitation of MAP, without further increase of pH. At least 80–90% of N can be distilled in 5–10% of the total volume. The article also discusses the quality of different products, cost of separation, and energy and chemical demand

Application of microbial risk assessment on a residentially-operated Bio-toilet

The Sustainable Sanitation System is a new wastewater treatment system that incorporates a non-flushing toilet (Bio-toilet) that converts excreta into a reusable resource (as fertilizer or humus for organic agriculture) and reduces the pollution load to environments of the rivers, the lakes, and the sea. However, the risk of exposure to pathogens should be considered, because excrement is stored in the Bio-toilet. The aim of the present work is to analyze the health risk of dealing with the matrix (excreta and urine mixed with sawdust) of the Bio-toilet. Therefore, the fate of pathogenic viruses was investigated using coliphages as a virus index, and the modeling of the die-off rate in matrix was introduced. Then the microbial risk assessment was applied to a Bio-toilet that was actually used in a residential house; the infection risks of rotavirus and enterovirus as reference pathogens were calculated

Stochastic modelling of drinking water treatment in quantitative microbial risk assessment

Dutch drinking water is safe, but how safe is that? Pathogenic microorganisms and indicator organisms such as E. coli are seldom detected in drinking water, however even very low numbers of microorganisms can still be relevant for public health. To determine how safe the water is, the efficacy of drinking water treatment to remove microorganisms needs to be determined. Patrick Smeets has developed methods to calculate both the treatment efficacy and the uncertainty about this. A computer model simulates the drinking water treatment based on experimental results and measurements of process conditions in practice. Variation of treatment efficacy had a large impact on drinking water safety. In case studies it became clear that previously applied point estimates, that do not take variations into account, can lead to over- and underestimation of the risk of infection. Sufficient monitoring at full-scale treatment systems is crucial, since conditions that occur only a few hours per year can still dominate the yearly average risk. The new methods allow the water companies to take preventive and corrective measures to always supply safe drinking water. In short, the methods can be used to determine how safe the water is, how certain we know this, and what we need to do to keep the water safe. Water companies can use the results to optimally run their drinking water systems, without unnecessary risks, and without unnecessary investments

Assessment of groundwater pollution risks in production wells with RESPOND

Drinking water companies need insight into the future quality of abstracted groundwater. Activities on the surface level linked to land use mainly determine the quality of groundwater. There is fundamental uncertainty about the quality of groundwater that will be pumped in the future because measurements of groundwater quality at monitoring wells only cover a very small part of a capture zone. RESPOND (Risk Evaluation of Soil Pollution for ProductiON of Drinking water) is a recently developed modeling instrument by which risks of groundwater pollution can be assessed. This instrument can be applied efficiently within an ArcGIS ModelBuilder environment, coupled with groundwater flow and transport models in which dilution, retardation and attenuation are taken into account. RESPOND facilitates the identification of effective risk-reducing measures such as changing land use in the capture zone or selection of additional monitoring sites

Living with water : 49 water projects in the Netherlands within the context of LIFE environment (1992-2006)

Which new ways are there to use water, both in industrial contexts and in private households? Which solutions have (local) authorities devised to give water an appropriate place in our living environment? The 49 LIFE environmental projects set out in this brochure, which are all Dutch water initiatives, provide inspirational answers to these questions. LIFE (L’Instrument Financier pour l’Environnement) is the European financing tool for the environment

Loss of life due to floods

This article gives an overview of the research on loss of life due to floods. The limited information regarding this topic is presented and evaluated. Analysis of global data for different flood types shows that the magnitude of mortality is related to the severity of the flood effects and the possibilities for warning and evacuation. Information from historical flood events gives a more detailed insight into the factors that determine mortality for an event, such as flood characteristics and the effectiveness of warning and evacuation. At the individual level, the occurrence of fatalities will be influenced by behaviour and individual vulnerability factors. Existing methods for the estimation of loss of life that have been developed for different types of floods in different regions are briefly discussed. A new method is presented for the estimation of loss of life due to floods of low-lying areas protected by flood defences. It can be used to analyse the consequences and risks of flooding and thereby provide a basis for risk evaluation and decision-making. The results of this research can contribute to the development of strategies to prevent and mitigate the loss of life due to floods

Veranderingen in muskusrattenbestrijding

Rinus Paauwe is dijkwerker.
