Call numbers

All books and journals in the library have a code on the back. This code is a call number and it gives the location of a book on a shelf. What the call number looks like depends on what collection the book or journal belongs to.
The FORUM library has 8 collections:
BOOKS books and reference works that are placed in open access, organized by subject
STUD.COLL (study collection) all the lecture notes, readers, textbooks and other books used in the curricula, arranged by chair group
JOURNALS recent issues of a selection of print journals, placed in open access
STACKS books, serial works and journals that are placed in the closed stacks. To obtain books from the closed stacks, you have to fill in a form in the catalogue on one of the terminals in the library
SPEC.COLL. (Special Collections Department) with rare and old books and journals, old and modern maps and atlases, nursery catalogues, garden and landscape designs, aerial photographs, botanical and zoological illustrations, prints and photographical images.
ATLASES atlases placed in open access
INFODESK items (mostly CD-ROMs), available from the information desk

The LEEUW library has 3 collections:

books, reference works and PhD theses on the Social Sciences, from 2000 onwards, organized by subject; journals (only paper versions if electronic version is not available).
STUD.COLL (study collection) all textbooks and other books on the Social Sciences, used in the curricula, arranged by subject.
SCRIPTIES   MSc theses on the Social Scieces, arranged by chair group, mainly from 2000 onwards.

Basically, libraries organize their collections by subject using subject classification systems. Wageningen UR Library has a subject classification system which is used in the FORUM library, LEEUW library, and some smaller libraries. In the FORUM library the subject classification system is only used for the BOOKS collection, whereas in the LEEUW library it is also used for the STUD.COLL collection. The call number consists of a subject code, a publication year and a sequence number to make the call number unique for each book title, e.g. 304-C/2008-01.

In the STUD.COLL collection in the FORUM library the books are organized by the three-letter codes of chair groups. LEEUW library arranges the SCRIPTIES by chair group using the internal courier numbers.

The journals (in JOURNALS) are placed in alphabetical order.

All other collections have a shelf number indicating only location, not subject.
