Exercises

  1. Open EndNote and create an EndNote library. In the following exercises, you are going to fill this library with references from different databases. For help on this go to the EndNote manual provided by the library.

  2. Perform a search in Web of Science and export (some of) the references to your EndNote library. A step by step explanation can be found in the EndNote manual provided by the library.

  3. Perform the same search in Scopus and export a selection of the references to your EndNote library. Information on how to do this is available in the Scopus help file or in the Endnote manual provided by the library.

  4. Do a similar search in the library catalogue and export the references to your EndNote library. A step by step explanation can be found in the EndNote manual provided by the library.

  5. Congratulations! You have your own personal bibliographic database now. If you did the same search in exercises 2-4, you probably have some duplicate references in your library. Find the duplicates and remove them (go to explanation on deduplication).

  6. Now it is time to write your thesis or report. Open Word and create a new file. Write a (nonsense) story and cite 10 references from your EndNote library. Create a reference list/bibliography in the style of APA 5th (If the Cite while you write (CWYW) option is on, the reference list is made instantly). APA 5th is an author-date type of style. Change the style to Science now. This style uses numbers in the text and in the reference list. A step by step explanation can be found in the EndNote manual provided by the library.
