Main features

A database in EndNote is called a library and has the extension .enl.

A library consists of references or records. These references might be journal articles, books, book sections, websites, theses, personal communication, or other reference types.

A reference consists of bibliographic fields. Each reference type has its own specific fields. For a journal article, the most important fields are the ones for author, title, publication year, journal name, volume, issue and pages (see figure). These fields are required to cite a journal article in a reference list. Besides the mentioned fields, there are fields for an abstract, keywords, an url, and many other useful bits of information.
