The popular search engine Google has developed a special version for science and technology, Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com), or Schoogle as it now already being called. At present it is still only a test version, but is already proving useful in keeping the mind well occupied. It is interesting that established publishers such as Elsevier (expensive journals) and ISI (monopoly on citation data) are suddenly experiencing competition from an unexpected source. Google is a welcome acquisition for those researchers who, to raise awareness of their publications, have long been flying the flag for Open Access publishing. Ongoing discussions about Google Scholar are particularly concerned with the question of what Google recognizes as being scientific. Scirus (www.scirus.com), one of Elsevier's competitors, explains this quite clearly. However, at present it is totally unclear what is included in Google Scholar, and reactions show that this test version of Google Scholar is very incomplete. The Wageningen UR repository is not yet included in Google Scholar, but soon will be. Another problem is the non-availability of full-text material; it can be found in Google Scholar, but only as abstracts. Once the Library has arranged entry, researchers will be able to gain access.
