In deze derde digitale Nieuwsbrief van Bibliotheek Wageningen UR hanteren wij dezelfde succesvolle formule als in de vorige publicaties.
In korte artikelen geven wij een brede kijk op de bibliotheekactiviteiten en actuele ontwikkelingen binnen de Bibliotheek.
Ook kunt u praktische tips voor het bibliotheekgebruik lezen. Voor vragen en aanvullende informatie kunt u terecht bij de redactie.

Bibliotheek Wageningen UR verruimt vanaf 1 februari de openingstijden van de bibliotheeklocaties Jan-Kopshuis en De Haaff. De Bibliotheek komt hiermee tegemoet aan de tijdens gebruikersonderzoek, vooral door studenten, geuite wens voor ruimere openingstijden.

Onderzoek Wageningen Digital Library |
|
 |
Bibliotheek Wageningen UR biedt via de Wageningen Digital Library een grote verscheidenheid aan digitale informatiebronnen.
Uit de LibQUAL+™ enquete blijkt dat de gebruikers de elektronische bibliotheek van groot belang vinden, maar vaak moeite hebben met het vinden van de
juiste informatie. De Bibliotheek wil haar dienstverlening ook op dit punt verbeteren en heeft een project gestart om dat te realiseren. De mening van
de gebruikers is van groot belang en het is vanzelfsprekend dat zij hierbij nauw worden betrokken. Allereerst worden groepsgesprekken met studenten
gehouden om te weten te komen waar de knelpunten zitten. Op basis van de uitkomsten worden de vervolgstappen nader uitgewerkt. Dit onderzoek wordt
uitgevoerd door Pleiade Management en Consultancy.
Op 1 februari a.s. organiseren wij een gebruikerssessie. Studenten, die willen meedenken en al enige ervaring hebben met de website van de Bibliotheek,
roepen wij van harte op om zich hiervoor aan te melden bij de coördinator mw. Irene Veerman

1700 elektronische boeken extra |
|

Onlangs heeft de Bibliotheek een nieuw contract afgesloten met Kluwer over het gebruik van e-journals.
Een onderdeel van het contract is dat medewerkers en studenten van Wageningen UR in 2005 gratis toegang hebben tot alle e-books
(ruim 1700 elektronische boeken) van Kluwer. Wij zijn benieuwd naar uw ervaringen en besluiten mede op basis daarvan of de toegang
in 2006 wordt voortgezet. Vanaf 2006 moet voor de toegang worden betaald.

Bibliotheek Leeuwenborch is tijdelijk verhuisd |
|

Het gebouw De Leeuwenborch wordt gerenoveerd en de bibliotheek is sinds mei 2004 gehuisvest in het voormalige IMAG-gebouw in Wageningen.
Alle monografieën zijn verhuisd. De tijdschriften en seriewerken bleven achter in de kelder van het gebouw. Dagelijks onderhouden de bibliotheekmedewerkers een pendeldienst
tussen De Leeuwenborch en het voormalige IMAG-gebouw om aangevraagde publicaties op te halen en weer terug te brengen.
Ook in de tijdelijke behuizing is Bibliotheek Leeuwenborch t/m juni 2005 op maandag- t/m donderdagavond en op zaterdag geopend. Zie het eerste artikel.
Volgens planning betrekt de Bibliotheek in augustus 2005 weer het gerenoveerde gebouw. In de bibliotheek worden de muren in lichte kleuren geschilderd, wordt
de vloerbedekking vervangen evenals de verlichting en de klimaatbeheersing. Ook wordt de inrichting voor een groot deel vernieuwd. De oudere boeken en jaargangen van
tijdschriften worden in het souterrain geplaatst. Meer recente boeken en lopende jaargangen van tijdschriften krijgen een plaats op de begane grond. Het aantal
studieplaatsen (100) wordt zoveel mogelijk gehandhaafd. Nieuw zijn de werkplekken voor groepjes van maximaal 4 studenten.
Bibliotheekgebruikers en -medewerkers kijken reikhalzend uit naar de terugkeer in de gerenoveerde en nieuw ingerichte bibliotheek.

Interieur-impressie Forum |
|
 |
Er wordt gestaag verder gewerkt aan het Forum, maar om een beeld te krijgen van de toekomstige behuizing van de Bibliotheek zijn we nog afhankelijk van tekeningen van de architect. Onlangs ontvingen wij een interieur-impressie.
Aan de rechterzijde van het gebouw komt de Bibliotheek met de toegang op de tweede verdieping.

QPat |

Vanaf eind 2004 hebben medewerkers en studenten van Wageningen UR toegang tot Qpat. Dit systeem is een combinatie van
een bibliografische patentendatase (PlusPat) en databases met de volledige teksten van patenten. Via PlusPat heeft u toegang tot 46 miljoen patentdocumenten
van meer dan 70 octrooibureaus. De full-text databases bevatten patenten (pdf) van meer dan 25 landen.
Ga naar QPat. Wageningen UR-bebruikers kunnen gewoon op LOGIN klikken.

Kwekerscatalogi geconserveerd en verfilmd |

Bibliotheek Wageningen UR beheert één van de belangrijkste, internationale collecties handels- en verkoopcatalogi
op het gebied van de land- en tuinbouw (m.n. sierteelt, groenten en fruit) uit de periode 1830 tot heden, totale omvang ca. 35.000 catalogi.
De collectie is waardevol voor historisch plantenonderzoek en historisch verantwoorde reconstructie van tuinen en parken. De oorsprong van de unieke collectie
ligt in een schenking van de vooraanstaande kwekersfamilie Krelage uit Haarlem waarvan de Bibliotheek ook de zogenaamde
Krelage-bibliotheek beheert. De collectie is de afgelopen tachtig jaar eigendom geweest van verschillende instellingen van Wageningen UR en ondertussen behoorlijk uitgebreid. Dit jaar worden 6.000 Nederlandse kwekerscatalogi uit de jaren 1830 tot 1950 in het kader van het nationale conserveringsprogramma Metamorfoze verfilmd en gedigitaliseerd.
Op initiatief van het Ministerie van OCenW is Metamorfoze in 1997 gestart voor behoud van het papieren erfgoed uit de periode 1840-1950. Dit geschiedt door
microverfilming (hoge kwaliteit en duurzaamheid), zuurvrije verpakking en verantwoorde opslag.
Vorig jaar is de collectie verpakt in zuurvrije dozen en omslagen. Momenteel wordt de eerste zending gereed gemaakt voor microverfilming. De Bibliotheek
heeft tevens gepleit voor een digitale kopie en sinds 2004 is dat binnen Metamorfoze mogelijk.
Na afronding van het proces zijn de kwekerscatalogi online raadpleegbaar in Wageningen Catalogus. Een overzicht van de collectie vindt u op de

IOS Press |

Medewerkers en studenten van Wageningen UR hebben vanaf januari 2005 toegang tot alle elektronische tijdschriften van IOS Press.
Tot nu toe waren slechts enkele tijdschriften van deze uitgever beschikbaar (Biorheology, Environmental Policy and Law); daar zijn nu circa 60 nieuwe titels
aan toegevoegd, waaronder Journal of Environmental Sciences en Spectroscopy.

Informatievaardigheden gewaardeerd |

Sinds een aantal jaren verzorgt Bibliotheek Wageningen UR, samen met de leerstoelgroep ECS (Educatie en Competentie Studies),
het vak Informatievaardigheden. Door het groeiende informatie-aanbod via de vele bronnen van de Bibliotheek en via zoekmachines op internet, wordt het steeds
moeilijker om een keuze te maken waar welke informatie gezocht moet worden en hoe de gevonden informatie te evalueren op bruikbaarheid en kwaliteit. De doelen
van Informatievaardigheden zijn o.a. het kennen van bibliotheekbronnen zoals Wageningen Catalogus en bibliografische databases en het hierin toepassen van
zoektechnieken, de kwaliteit van internetbronnen beter kennen en het kunnen beoordelen en evalueren van de gevonden informatie.
Het vak wordt aangeboden in de elektronische leeromgeving Blackboard en is opgebouwd uit een aantal modules en learning units. Een informatiespecialist
verzorgt een inleidend college en ondersteunt vervolgens de studenten bij het doorwerken van de modules. Ook wordt een opdracht uitgevoerd in een fysieke
bibliotheek. Informatievaardigheden wordt afgesloten met een toets of een werkstuk waarin het geleerde in praktijk wordt gebracht.
Informatievaardigheden voorziet in een behoefte (dat blijkt ook uit de resultaten van de LibQUAL+™
-enquête) en wordt door de studenten positief gewaardeerd.
In de 'Onderwijskaders bachelor- en masteropleidingen Wageningen Universiteit 2005/2006' is als competentie opgenomen dat in alle studieprogramma's aandacht
moet worden besteed aan Informatievaardigheden. Samen met de leerstoelgroep ECS worden de opleidingscoördinatoren van de verschillende studierichtingen
benaderd. De inhoud en het doel van het vak worden uitgelegd en er wordt gewezen op de mogelijkheid om de cursus in het curriculum op te nemen, zodat er
aan de genoemde competentie kan worden voldaan.
Ook is er overleg gaande om een cursus Informatievaardigheden te gaan verzorgen voor AIO's. |

Tip: Zoeken naar een tijdschrift in de Wageningen Catalogus |

De beste manier om te zoeken naar een tijdschrift in de Wageningen Catalogus.
Als u de titel (of de eerste woorden) van een tijdschrift weet, kunt u het beste als volgt zoeken:
- ga naar de catalogus www.library.wur.nl/desktop/catalog/
- kies Browse Journals
- tik de eerste woorden (of de hele titel) in (als het eerste woord een stopwoord is, moet deze worden weggelaten: bijv.Lancet i.p.v. The Lancet)
- klik op Browse all journals of Browse electronic journals only
- kies het gewenste tijdschrift uit de getoonde lijst
Weet u de titel niet exact of bent u niet zeker van de eerste woorden en/of de volgorde, dan zoekt u bij voorkeur als volgt:
- ga naar de catalogus: www.library.wur.nl/desktop/catalog/
- kies voor title word(s) als zoekveld
- tik de woorden waarvan u zeker bent in het zoekveld
- kies Type of Document Journal
- kies het gewenste tijdschrift uit de getoonde lijst

Gebruik van pop-up blockers |
|
 |
Pop-ups in websites zijn boodschappen, die veel gebruikers niet willen zien. Daarom worden zogenaamde AddOns bij Internet Browsers als de Google en
HotBot toolbars voorzien van een mogelijkheid om pop-up-schermen automatisch te blokkeren. Soms is het gevolg dat pagina's in de Wageningen Digital Library niet zijn te openen.
Gezien de hoeveelheid informatie in de Wageningen Digital Library is het onoverkomelijk om daarvoor nieuwe vensters te openen. Heb je problemen omdat links in de Wageningen Desktop
Library ogenschijnlijk geen effect hebben? Controleer dan de instellingen van eventueel geïnstalleerde hulpprogramma's. Zet de pop-up blocker uit of geef, als het mogelijk is, aan
dat pop-ups van library.wur.nl geoorloofd zijn

Wensen en aanschafsuggesties |
|
|
In het laatste LibQUAL+™ onderzoek maakten gebruikers opmerkingen over het ontbreken van tijdschriften op bepaalde vakgebieden.
De Bibliotheek ontvangt echter weinig aanschafsuggesties. Daarom doen wij een dringende oproep om uw wensen door te geven aan de Bibliotheek of gebruik
te maken van het vragenformulier op de website.

Wageningen UR Library, we will be keeping to the same successful
formula as in previous publications. A broad view of library
activities and any major developments within the Library will be
made available, together with practical tips on how to use the
Library. In a few cases we will be asking our readers to cooperate
with us so that we can provide a better service. For additional

Library extends opening times |
|
|
From 1 February 2005, the opening times of Wageningen
UR Library facilities in the Jan-Kopshuis Library and the De Haaff
Library will be extended. The Library will thus be responding to the
demand for extended opening hours, which were conveyed in the users
survey, especially by students. The new opening times are as
follows:

Digital Library Study |
|
|
Wageningen UR Library is able to offer extensive
sources of digital information by means of the Wageningen Desktop
Library. The LibQUAL+™ questionnaire demonstrated that users of the
electronic library consider it to be of the utmost importance, but
often have problems finding the right information. The Library also
wants to improve its services on this point and a project is already
underway with this in mind. Users' opinions are of great importance
and it goes without saying that the users themselves will be closely
involved. In the first place, group discussions will be held with
students to determine exactly where the bottlenecks are. Subsequent
steps will be further processed on the basis of the results. Pleiade
Management and Consultancy will undertake this study. On 1 February
2005 we will be organising a users' session. Students who have some
experience of the Library's website and who wish to contribute, are
more than welcome to contact the coordinator Irene Veerman.

1700 more electronic books |
|
|
The Library has recently entered into a new contract
with Kluwer concerning the use of electronic journals. Part of this
contract is that in 2005, staff and students of Wageningen UR will
have free access to more than 1700 electronic books published by
Kluwer. We are interested to hear of your personal experience before
continuing the contract in 2006, when free access will no longer be
available and will have to be paid for. Go to: Kluwer

The Leeuwenborch Library has been
moved temporarily |
|
|
During renovation work on the Leeuwenborch Library
building the contents, including all monographs, were moved in May
2004 to the former IMAG building in Wageningen. The journals and
series publications remain in the cellar of the Library building.
Library personnel are maintaining a daily shuttle service between
the Leeuwenborch and the former IMAG, collecting and returning
requested publications.
Until the end of June 2005, the
Leeuwenborch Library will be open from Monday to Thursday evening
inclusive, and on Saturdays, at its temporary location. If
everything goes to plan the Library should be back in its renovated
home in August 2005. The inside walls of the library will be painted
in light colours, floor coverings will be replaced as will the
lighting and climate control. Most of the interior will also be
refurbished. Older books and old volumes of journals will be housed
in the basement. More recent books and current volumes will be
accommodated on the ground floor. As far as possible, the number of
study places (100) will be maintained. Workstations for groups of a
maximum of four students will be introduced.

well as the staff are looking forward to returning to the renovated
and refurnished library. |

Steady progress is being made to the Forum, but in
order to get some sort of picture of the future housing of the
Library we are still dependent upon the architect's drawings. We
have recently received an impression of the interior.
The library
will be situated at the right-hand side of the building with direct
access to the second floor.

QPat |
|
|
Since the end of 2004 staff and students of
Wageningen UR have been able to access Qpat. This system is a
combination of a bibliographic patent database (PlusPat), and
databases with full-texts of patents. Via PlusPat 46 million patent
documents can be accessed from more than 70 patent offices. The
full-text databases include patents (pdf) from more than 25
countries.
Go to QPat. Users within Wageningen UR can simply click
LOGIN.

Nursery catalogues preserved and microfilmed |
|
|
Wageningen UR Library has one of the most important international collections of nursery and seed catalogues in the field of agriculture and horticulture, particularly ornamentals, vegetables and fruit, dating from 1830 to the present day. The collection comprises a total of approximately 35,000 catalogues, and is valuable for historical plant research and for the historically accountable reconstruction of parks and gardens. This unique collection was started by the Krelage family, leading growers' from Haarlem of whom the Library also obtained the Krelage-Library. The collection was owned and greatly enlarged by a number of different institutes of Wageningen UR in the past eighty years.
This year 6,000 Dutch nursery catalogues from 1830 to 1950 will be microfilmed and digitalised for the National Conservation Programme 'Metamorfoze', set up by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in 1997 for the conservation of vulnerable documents from the period 1840 to 1950. Conservation is achieved by microfilming (for high quality and durable readability), acid-free packaging and acclimatised storage.
Last year the collection was packed in acid-free boxes. The first batch has now been prepared for microfilming. The Library will provide its users with digital copies from the microfilm.
Once the process has been completed, the nursery catalogues will be available online in the Wageningen Catalogue. For an overview of the collection see:

IOS Press |
|
|
Since January 2005, staff and students of Wageningen
UR have had access to all electronic journals published by IOS
Press. Previously only a few journals from this publisher were
available (Biorheology, Environmental Policy and Law); a further 60
new titles have been added, including the Journal of Environmental
Sciences and Spectroscopy.

Information Literacy appreciated |
|
|
For several years Wageningen UR Library, in
cooperation with the Faculty of Education and Competence Studies
(ECS), has been taking care of the subject, Information Literacy. Due
to the growing amount of information available via the many sources
offered by the Library and via search engines on the Internet, it is
becoming increasingly more difficult to make a choice as to which
information should be searched and how that information can be
evaluated for usability and quality. Amongst other things, the
objectives of Information Literacy are:
to learn about Library sources such as Wageningen Catalogues and
bibliographic databases
to be able to apply the correct search techniques
to become more skilled in assessing the quality of Internet
sources and evaluating the information found.
The subject
Information Literacy is offered in the electronic study environment
Blackboard and is made up of a number of modules and learning units.
An information specialist presents an introductory lecture and
subsequently guides the students through their modules. The students
are also required to perform an assignment in a physical library.
The course is concluded with a test or project, which puts into
practice what has been learnt.
Information Literacy fulfils a
need (this is also seen in the results from the LibQUAL+™
-Questionnaire) and is much appreciated by the students. Information
Literacy must be included in all Bachelors and Masters courses,
2005/2006, at Wageningen University. In cooperation with the Faculty
of Education and Competence Studies, teaching coordinators of the
various courses will be approached. The content and objective of the
subject will be explained and the possibilities of including the
course in the curriculum will be examined, so that full competence
can be achieved. An Information Literacy course for PhDs is also being
considered.

Tip: searching for journals |
|
|
If you know the title (or the first words) of a journal,
the best way of searching is as follows:
- Go to the Catalogue
- Choose Browse Journals
- Type in the first words, or the whole title. If, however, the first word is a stop word (a, an, the etc.), then leave it out:
e.g. Lancet instead of The Lancet)
- Click Browse all journals or Browse electronic journals only
- Choose the desired journal from the list shown
If you don't know the exact title, or are unsure of the first words
and/or the order they are in, then it is best to search as follows:
- Go to the Catalogue
- Choose Title Words as search field
- Type the words of which you are certain in the search field
- Choose Type of Document Journal
- Choose the desired journal from the list shown

Use of Pop-Up blockers |
|
|
Pop-ups in websites are messages that many users do
not wish to see, which is why the so-called AddOns by Internet
Browsers such as Google and HotBot are provided with toolbars so
that pop-up screens can be automatically blocked. This sometimes
results in being unable to open pages in the Wageningen Desktop
Library. Because of the amount of information held in the Wageningen
Digital Library it is insuperable to open new windows. Are you having
problems because links in the Wageningen Digital Library are
apparently having no effect? If so check the installed help
programs. Switch the pop-up blocker off or indicate, if possible,
that pop-ups of library.wur.nl are permitted.

Wishes and purchasing suggestions |
|
|
In the last LibQUAL+™ study, users remarked on the
lack of journals in certain disciplines. However, the Library did
not receive many purchasing suggestions, which is why we are
urgently asking you to forward your suggestions to the Library or
make use of the Question Form on the website.
