Minisymposium: How to write a world-class paper |

Vooraankondiging: op donderdag 17 oktober organiseert Bibliotheek Wageningen UR in samenwerking met Elsevier Science een minisymposium voor publicerende (Wageningse) onderzoekers over het publicatieproces en -strategie onder de titel How to write a world-class paper. Tijdens deze middag richten we ons op (jonge) onderzoekers en PhD-er's. We vertellen hen over de ins en outs van het publicatieproces en hoe je als onderzoeker zelf invloed kunt uitoefenen op het succes van je publicaties. De verwachte sprekers zijn:
Het symposium is van 13:30 tot 17:00 uur in de grote collegezaal van het nieuwe Oriongebouw, Wageningen Campus. Na afloop kunt u onder het genot van een drankje nog even napraten. Toegang is gratis, wel is aanmelden verplicht. De aanmelding zal voor de zomer worden opengesteld.       |

Alle redes digitaal |

Alle redes van Wageningen University zijn sinds kort digitaal beschikbaar. In totaal gaat het om 845 inaugurele- en afscheidsredes, maar ook redes bij speciale gelegenheden en bij de opening van het academisch jaar. De opeenvolgende redes geven een goed beeld van de ontwikkeling van een vakgebied, zo vindt u hier bijvoorbeeld alle redes van de leerstoelgroep Plantenveredeling. Veranderingen door de jaren heen zijn goed te zien aan de layout van de redes: in het verleden een eenvoudige, standaard cover, tegenwoordig met een mooie afbeelding erop. Ook het welkomstwoord is in de afgelopen eeuwen veranderd, in 1913 werden verschillende groepen toehoorders nog zeer formeel apart benoemd: “Hoogedelgestrenge Heer Directeur- Generaal van den Landbouw, Zeergeleerde Heeren, Directeur en Leeraren aan de Rijks Hoogere Land-, Tuin- en Boschbouwschool; Dames en Heeren Assistenten en Studenten en Gij allen, die mij heden met Uw tegenwoordigheid Vereert…” (Rede van E.J. Kempees,1913) Terwijl het er tegenwoordig iets eenvoudiger aan toe gaat: “Mijnheer de rector, dames en heren…” (Rede van Prof. dr. ir. Michiel F. Wallis de Vries, 2012) Het identificeren en digitaliseren van de redes is een onderdeel van het digitaliseringsprogramma de "Wageningse bibliografie", dat als doel heeft zo veel mogelijk publicaties van Wageningen UR digitaal beschikbaar te maken. |

Samenwerking om beter met onderzoeksdata om te gaan |

De Bibliotheek zet zich in om ook onderzoeksdata goed te bewaren en toegankelijk te maken, evenals publicaties en andere producten van de wetenschappelijke activiteiten. We hebben het mogelijk gemaakt om datasets te koppelen aan Wageningse publicaties, en die datasets duurzaam op te slaan in landelijke archieven. Daarnaast hielden we discussiebijeenkomsten bij de Science Groups van Wageningen UR om het bewustzijn over problemen en oplossingen voor het beheer van onderzoeksdata te bevorderen. Deze bijeenkomsten zijn samen met de IT-afdeling (FB-IT) georganiseerd, die zich vanuit een meer technische invalshoek hiermee bezighoudt. Dit voorjaar is de tweede cursus Data management planning voor PhD studenten. Data management planning is nu ook beter ingebed in de organisatie van het onderzoek. De Wageningen Graduate Schools hebben een werkgroep ingesteld om een beleid op het gebied van data te formuleren, waarin de Bibliotheek heeft meegewerkt. Het resultaat is onlangs door de directeuren van onderzoeksscholen goedgekeurd. In dit beleid, dat in het komende jaar wordt doorgevoerd, is het Data management plan een onderdeel van het onderzoeksplan. |

Tentoonstelling Kleurrijk Wageningen 750 |

Op 12 juni heeft Wageningen 750 jaar stadsrechten. In dit jubileumjaar zijn er allerlei activiteiten en initiatieven. De tentoonstelling “Kleurrijk Wageningen 750” van Bibliotheek Wageningen UR in het Forum toont de geschiedenis van Wageningen. Wageningen en haar omgeving kent een unieke historische ontwikkeling van vestingstad tot universiteitsstad. De universiteit heeft Wageningen ook vaak als object van onderzoek en onderwijs gebruikt. Dat is in de tentoonstelling te zien in drie thema’s, die met de kleuren blauw (water), rood (bebouwing) en groen (landbouw en natuur) worden aangeduid. Blauw: begonnen als doorwaadbare plek aan de Rijn is Wageningen aan het water, uitgegroeid tot een stad met een gracht, een kanaal en een haven. Rood: tegelijkertijd vindt de ontwikkeling van Wageningen Stad tot universiteitsstad plaats, een bijzondere plek om te wonen en te werken. En tenslotte Wageningen in het Groen, de rol van landbouw, landschapsarchitectuur en natuur in en rondom de stad. Deze ontwikkeling wordt in beeld gebracht middels zeldzame en bijzondere publicaties, prenten, kaarten en luchtfoto’s uit de Speciale Collecties van de Bibliotheek. Hubert Krekels hield er al rekening mee |

Hubert Krekels is per 1 februari de nieuwe bibliothecaris van Wageningen UR. Hij is de opvolger van Ger Spikman, die per die datum met pensioen is gegaan. Hubert hield er zelf ook wel rekening mee dat hij benaderd zou worden. “Als het moment dan dichterbij komt, dan ga je wel bij jezelf te rade of je het wilt en hoe je het wilt invullen”. Sinds zijn intrede bij Bibliotheek Wageningen UR op 1 november 2002 als Hoofd Bibliotheek Dier heeft hij een brede ervaring opgedaan in de bibliotheek. Hij werd Hoofd van de afdeling Document en Publicatie Service (DPS) en daarna Hoofd Collectie en Informatiemanagement (CIM), een functie die hij nu nog combineert met die van bibliothecaris. “Wij hebben de afdelingstaken enigszins geherstructureerd en zo werkt het prima en naar mijn mening is dat op dit moment een betere oplossing dan het aantrekken van een nieuw hoofd.” Al in mei vorig jaar is Hubert gevraagd om Ger Spikman op te volgen. “Ik heb altijd al veel aan bedrijfsvoering gedaan en mij ook met de financiële huishouding van de bibliotheek bemoeid.” Zijn inwerkperiode gebruikte hij vooral om zich de sterke punten van Ger Spikman eigen te maken: de ins en outs van de collectie en daarmee gepaard gaande onderhandelingen over overeenkomsten met bijvoorbeeld uitgevers. De nieuwe bibliothecaris zet het beleid van zijn voorgangers in grote lijnen voort. “Wij hebben een uitstekende digitale bibliotheek, die onder Dick van Zaane en Ger Spikman vorm heeft gekregen. Maar de bibliotheek is een klein radertje op het gebied van online informatievoorziening. Onze potentiële gebruikers kunnen een overdaad aan informatie binnenhalen. We moeten nog beter weten wat onze klanten en opdrachtgevers willen. Het is niet alleen onze taak om de klant de juiste informatie op maat te leveren maar tevens, middels onze expertise, de klant te voorzien van de tools voor het attenderen op meer informatie in zijn interessesfeer.” De Wageningse bibliotheek is nadrukkelijk meer digitaal dan andere Nederlandse universiteitsbibliotheken. “Dat komt door onze studierichtingen en door de omvangrijke onderzoekpoot in Wageningen. Daardoor wordt er veel gelezen en dientengevolge gedownload. In vergelijking met de andere bibliotheken wordt er bij ons substantieel meer gedownload.” Volgens hem heeft de universiteitsbibliotheek zeker toekomst zolang we maar scherp blijven innoveren. De bibliotheeklocatie is hoofdzakelijk studieplek. Dat is een feit en daarop moet de bibliotheek inspelen. En daarvoor wil hij zich ten volle inzetten. Hubert karakteriseert zichzelf “sociaal anders” dan zijn voorganger. “Afstandelijker, nog zakelijker en meer een drammer om mijn doel te bereiken”. |

De pagina Find & Discover in de digitale bibliotheek is dé ingang naar de informatiebronnen. U kunt hier direct zoeken in 'Global Search', een collectie van miljoenen artikelen, boeken, rapporten, proceedings, dissertaties, enz. Het grootste deel (maar dus niet alles) van onze collectie is hierin te vinden. Ook de bibliotheekcatalogus (ons bezit aan boeken, tijdschriften, rapporten, enz.) vindt u erin, evenals de Staff publications (publicaties van Wageningse onderzoekers). U kunt op deze pagina ook een keuze maken uit de lijst van 'Frequently used databases'. Maar weet u niet precies welke bron te raadplegen dan maakt u gebruik van 'Browse resources & recommendations'. Hier kunt u zoeken en op vakgebied bladeren in onze collecties tijdschriften, databases, studieboeken en naslagwerken. In de collecties databases, dictionaries en encyclopedias zijn de aanbevolen werken op een bepaald vakgebied met sterren aangegeven (nadat u hebt gebladerd op vakgebied). De gevonden tijdschriften kunt u, behalve op alfabet, sorteren op ' Importance' (hoe vaak wordt door Wageningers geciteerd uit artikelen in dit tijdschrift) en op 'Impactfactor'. Onderaan de pagina Find & Discover vindt u de nieuwste boeken in onze collectie. Wanneer u doorklikt naar 'More new books' dan krijgt u een fraai beeld van (de voorkanten van) de nieuwe boeken. U kunt doorklikken naar de catalogusrecords zodat u kunt zien waar de boeken staan en of ze nog beschikbaar of al uitgeleend zijn. 'Global Search' en de 'Resource browser' zijn applicaties die door de Bibliotheek ontwikkeld worden en die ook in de komende tijd nog zullen worden aangepast aan de wensen van onze gebruikers. |

Bibliotheek brengt informatie naar de agrarische sector |

Vanuit de bibliotheekcollectie worden diverse deelselecties geleverd aan websites van derden, die de informatie vervolgens vindbaar maken via bijvoorbeeld een zoekbox naar publicaties over een bepaald onderwerp. Zo voorziet Bibliotheek Wageningen UR in een zoekomgeving op maat voor gebruikers van verschillende websites. Vaak is deze Open Access informatie ook interessant voor Wageningen UR medewerkers en studenten. Onlangs is weer een aantal afnemers van bibliotheekinformatie toegevoegd: Bibliotheek Wageningen UR digitaliseert de artikelen van Dendroflora. Het Dendrologisch jaarboek/tijdschrift bevat een keur aan praktische tot semi-wetenschappelijke artikelen over het sortiment houtige gewassen en vaste planten. Dendroflora was tot nu toe alleen op papier beschikbaar, maar is nu vanaf 1998 digitaal te raadplegen via ARTIK+ voor Groen Kennisnet. - Greenbrains, kennisportaal van de Greenport Venlo - Maiscoach.nl, de onafhankelijke site, die jaarrond helpt de beste mais te telen - PigBusiness.nl, nieuws- en kennisportaal voor ondernemers in de varkenshouderij.

Website ISRIC Library vernieuwd |

De ISRIC World Soil Information Document Database is geheel vernieuwd. De online database van ISRIC - World Soil Information is mogelijk gemaakt door Bibliotheek Wageningen UR en mooi geïntegreerd in de ISRIC website. De database bevat ongeveer 8.000 (gedigitaliseerde) kaarten en 15.000 rapporten en boeken over bodems, maar gerelateerde informatie over klimaat, geologie, geomorfologie, vegetatie, landgebruik en landgeschiktheid wordt ook verzameld. De webpagina heeft een nieuwe, overzichtelijker lay-out gekregen en de zoekfunctie is aanmerkelijk verbeterd. Neem een kijkje. Het is nu mogelijk op een Google-achtige manier publicaties te zoeken. Met filters kan het zoekresultaat verfijnd worden op country, region, keyword, documenttype, digital map, full text report, publication year, author/editor and language. De ISRIC World Soil Information Document Database oogt frisser en is overzichtelijker door de sitenavigatie bovenin met drie zoekingangen: Een abonnement op de ISRIC Newsfeed on reports and maps via email of via RSS is mogelijk. Alles over sportgrassen |

Altijd al alles willen weten over de grassoorten op golfterreinen? Dat kan nu! De website sportgrassen.nl, die op 2 april is gelanceerd, ontsluit kennis over sportgrassen uit de collectie van Groen Kennisnet. Kies bijvoorbeeld voor 'Golfbanen' en vervolgens op de afbeelding 'Grassen'. De zoektermen verschijnen automatisch in het zoekvenster. Klik op zoek en u vindt meer dan 100 informatiebronnen uit de collectie van Groen Kennisnet. Dit nieuwe kennisportaal is een initiatief van de Buitengewone Leerstoel Turfgrass Sciences (in oprichting) bij Wageningen University. Medewerkers van Bibliotheek Wageningen UR zorgden dat het portaal gebruik kan maken van een zoekvenster en de collectie van Groen Kennisnet. Mini-symposium: How to write a world-class paper |

Announcement: On Tuesday, 17 October, the Wageningen UR Library, in collaboration with Elsevier Science, is giving the mini-symposium, How to Write a World-class Paper, on the publishing process and strategy for Wageningen and non Wageningen researchers who publish. During the afternoon we will focus on young Wageningen researchers and PhD candidates. We will explain the ins and outs of the publishing process to them and how they as researchers can influence the success of their publications. The following speakers are expected:
The symposium will be held from 1:30 to 5 pm in the large lecture hall of the new Orion building, Wageningen Campus. After the symposium, participants are invited to continue their discussions over cocktails. Attendance is free, but registration is required. Registration for the symposium will open before the summer. |

Wageningen University addresses digitally available |
|
|
All Wageningen University addresses are now digitally available. In total, 845 inaugural and farewell addresses are available but also the addresses for special occasions and the opening of the academic year. The consecutive addresses give a good picture of a field’s development. For instance, here you can find all the addresses of the Plant Breeding chair group. Changes over the years are clearly visible in the layout of the addresses. In the past, the address had a standard cover, and now the cover has an attractive image on it. The opening of the addresses has also changed over the last century. In 1913, different groups of listeners were individually and very formally named: “The Honourable Director-General of Agriculture, Very learned Gentlemen, Director and Staff of the National Higher College of Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry; Ladies and Gentlemen Assistants and Students all of You who honour me with your presence today..."(Address of E.J. Kempees,1913) While addresses now start somewhat simpler: “Mister Rector, ladies and gentlemen...'(Address of Prof. dr ir Michiel F. Wallis de Vries, 2012) Identifying and digitising the addresses is part of the digitisation programme the "Wageningen Bibliography", the goal of which is to make digitally available as many Wageningen UR publications as possible. |

Collaboration to better handle research data |
|
|
The Library is making every effort to both safely store and make available research data as well as publications and other products of the university´s scientific activity. We´ve recently made it possible to couple datasets to Wageningen publications and to sustainably save these datasets in national archives. In addition to these activities, we´ve also held meetings with different Sciences Groups to raise the awareness around the problems of and to foster solutions for research data management. The library is organising these meetings with the IT department (FB-IT), which approaches these issues from a more technical perspective. This spring the course Data management planning for PhD students will be given for the second time. Data management planning is now being better embedded in a PhD project’s research planning. The Wageningen Graduate Schools created a working group to formulate policy on data, which the Library participated in. The recommendations of the working group have recently been approved by the directors of the graduate schools. The new policy will be implemented in the coming year and requires a data management plan to be a part of a project’s research plan. |

Exhibition Colourful Wageningen 750 |
|
|
On 12 June 2013, Wageningen will celebrate 750 years of city rights. This anniversary year will be celebrated with all sorts of activities and initiatives. The Wageningen UR Library’s exhibition “Colourful Wageningen 750” in the Forum will show the history of Wageningen. Wageningen and its surroundings have a unique historical development from a fortified city to a university town.The university has also often used Wageningen as a research and educational object. This is explained in the exhibition in three themes that are designated by the colours blue for water, red for buildings and green for agriculture and nature. Blue: starting as a place to ford the Rhine, Wageningen on the water has developed into a city with a moat, a canal and a harbour. Red: the City of Wageningen simultaneously develops into a university town, a special place to live and to work. And finally Green: Wageningen in Green, the role of agriculture, landscape architecture and nature in and around the city. This development is portrayed using rare and exceptional publications, prints, maps and aerial photos from the Library’s Special Collections. The exhibition will run from 3 June to 18 October 2013, Monday to Friday, 9 am - 5 pm and will be held in the Reading Room of the Special Collections, Forum (bldg. 102), Droevendaalsesteeg 2, 6708 PB Wageningen. Hubert Krekels already considered it |
|
|
As from 1 February, Hubert Krekels is Wageningen UR’s new librarian. He succeeds Ger Spikman, who retired on 1 February. Hubert thought that he might be approached for the position. “As the moment approaches, you start to ask yourself if you want the job and how you would do it.” Since his start at Wageningen UR Library on 1 November 2002 as the Head of the Animal Library, Hubert has gained considerable experience in the library. He became the Head of the Document and Publication Service (DPS) and then the Head of Collection and Information Management (CIM), a position that he is currently combining with his duties as Librarian. “We’ve restructured the departmental duties a bit and it's working out fine, and in my opinion, this is a better solution at the moment than recruiting a new departmental head. In May of last year, Hubert was asked to succeed Ger Spikman. “I’ve always done a lot with operations and have also been involved in the library’s financial affairs.”He used the transition period between Ger and him particularly to incorporate into his own management Spikman's strengths: the collection’s ins and outs as well as the collection’s on-going contract negotiations with, for example, publishers. The new librarian is, in general, going to continue the policy of his predecessors. “We have an excellent digital library that took shape under Dick van Zaane and Ger Spikman. But the library is a just a small cog in the machine that provides online information. Our potential users can gather an excess of information. We have to better understand what our customers and clients want. It’s not only our job to deliver the right tailor-made information to our customer but also to use our expertise to provide the customer with the tools that will alert him to more information in his field of interest. The Wageningen Library is definitely more digital than other Dutch university libraries. “That´s because of our subjects and the strong focus on research in Wageningen. For this reason, a lot is being read and, as a result, a lot is being downloaded.In comparison to other libraries, substantially more is being downloaded." In his opinion, the university library certainly has a future as long as we stay on the cutting-edge of innovation.The library location is mainly a place to study. That’s a fact and the library has to capitalize on that. And the new librarian wants to fully dedicate himself to this.Finally, Hubert characterizes himself as "socially different” from his predecessor. “More reserved, more business-like and more unrelenting in achieving my goals". |

The digital library’s page Find & Discover is the entrance to its information resources. Using 'Global Search' you can immediately search a collection of millions of articles, books, reports, proceedings, dissertations and much more. You can find the largest part of our collection here. You can also find our library catalogue (the books, journals, reports etc. we own) as well as Staff publications(publications of Wageningen researchers). On the Find & Discover page, you can also select from the list of 'Frequently used databases'. But, when you don’t know the exact resource to consult, you can use 'Browse resources & recommendations'. Here you can search, and you can browse in our collections of journals, databases, textbooks and reference books according to field. In the collections of databases, dictionaries and encyclopaedias, the recommended works for a specific field are starred after you’ve browsed according to field. In addition to alphabetically sorting your retrieved journals, you can also sort according to 'Importance’ (how often do Wageningen researchers cite the articles in this journal) and according to 'Impact factor’. At the bottom of the Find & Discover page, you can find the newest books in our collection. If you click through to More new books, then you get a beautiful image of each new book's cover. Finally, you can click to the catalogue records so that you can see where the books are located and if they're available or if they've been lent. Global Search and the Resource browser are applications that the library is developing and that will also soon be tailored to the wishes of our users. |

The Library is bringing information to the agrarian sector |
|
|
Several selections from the library collection are being delivered to the websites of third parties who then make the information findable through, for example, a search box to publications on a specific subject. In this way, the Wageningen UR Library is providing a tailor-made search environment for users of different websites. This Open Access information is also interesting for Wageningen UR staff and students. Several consumers of library information have recently been added: - Wageningen UR Library is digitising the articles of Dendroflora. The Dendrological yearbook/journal contains a selection of practical to semi-scientific articles on ligneous crops and perennial plants. Until recently, Dendroflora was only available in print, but it is now digitally available from 1998 via ARTIK+ voor Groen Kennisnet. - Greenbrains, kennisportaal van de Greenport Venlo - Maiscoach.nl, the independent site that helps users year round to grow the best maize. - PigBusiness.nl, news and knowledge portal for entrepreneurs in pig farming

ISRIC Library website revised |

The website from the ISRIC World Soil Information Document Database has been completely revised. The ISRIC World Soil Information Document Database is the online database from ISRIC - World Soil Information. The database is powered by Wageningen UR Library and has been nicely integrated into the ISRIC website. The ISRIC database contains about 8,000 digitized maps and 15,000 reports and books on soil but also related geographic information on climate, geology, geomorphology, vegetation, land use, and land suitability. The site has recently received a new, easy-to-read lay-out, and the search function has been improved considerably. Have a look! The site now allows users to search for publications in a Google-like fashion and to refine their search results according to country, region, keyword, document type, digital map, full-text report, publication year, author/editor and language. The new site also looks cleaner and is better organized since the site navigation has been located at the top of the screen and given three search entries: Users can subscribe to the ISRIC Newsfeed to receive reports and maps by email or RSS. Everything about turfgrass |
|
|
Have you always wanted to know everything about the different types of grasses on golf courses? That's possible. Launched on 2 April, the website sportgrassen.nl offers information about turfgrasses. The information is provided by the Groen Kennisnet collection. To access this information, go to the website and select ‘Golfbanen’ (Golf courses) and then click on the image ‘Grassen‘ (Grasses). The search terms will automatically appear in the search window. Click on search and you can find more than 100 informational resources from the Groen Kennisnet collection. This new knowledge portal is an initiative from the Special Chair Turfgrass Sciences currently being established at Wageningen University. Wageningen UR Library employees ensured that the portal could use a search window and the Groen Kennisnet collection. Each week the collection is updated with new articles and reports.
