Variations in yield response to fertilizer application in the tropics: II. risks and opportunities for smallholders cultivating maize on Kenya's arable land
1997
Risks and opportunities of maize production and fertilizer use under rain-fed conditions in Kenya and effects of variations in cost-price ratios were identified for a cross-section in Kenya. Production and financial risks and opportunities were quantified for maize grown in various agro-ecological zones of Kenya under alternative management practices, with special reference to nitrogen and phosphorus application. Comparison of results of different management practices under given combinations of climate, soil and cultivar with results from selective sensitivity analyses indicated the scope for adaptation to risks. The risk assessment approach based on crop growth modelling can take into account different production goals and farmers' attitudes towards risk.
