Toelichting (Engels) This book represents a first attempt at presenting an overview of European cultural landscapes from a European perspective, with the intention to highlight the important contribution of cultural landscapes to European heritage, to point out the perilous state in which many of these landscapes find themselves, and to urge that appropriate action be taken at all levels within European society to ensure long-term survival. It features descriptions of over fifty examples of cultural landscapes from regions that span from the Iberian peninsula to Scandinavia and from Ireland to Estonia. While the focus is on ecological and management aspects, many other aspects are also touched on, inculding historical perspectives, preservation of associated physical structures, production of high-value foods, socio-economic considerations and, above all, the measures required to ensure survival in the future.
