Toelichting (Engels) The morphologic features of the Geldersche Vallei (valley of Gelderland) suggest the former presence of a Rhine-arm and until recently the general opinion was, that the sanddeposit of Lower Terrace age in this valley has been brought by the Rhine. Recent extensive sediment-petrological investigations by CROMMELIN prove, that these sands are of local origin, having been transported - chiefly from the Veluwe - into the G.V. by wind, rainwater and solifluction, and not by the Rhine. True Rhine-sands contain the so called Lobith-association (brown hornblende, Rhine-titanite and augite). These minerals were absent, or of a different type, in the more than 200 samples analyzed by CROMMELIN. The author tries to find a way out of the conflict between the known morphologic and sediment-petrologic data.
